Capcom has provided a more detailed look at how Proto Man will play in Mega Man: Dual Override, outlining a close-range combat style built around powerful attacks, his iconic shield and a new heat-management system. The character was already confirmed as the game’s second playable hero, but the latest PlayStation Blog breakdown explains how substantially his progression and combat differ from Mega Man’s. Dual Override is scheduled to launch in spring 2027.

Where Mega Man is designed around ranged attacks, Proto Man is intended to push players closer to enemies. His Proto Buster has comparatively short range but deals high damage at point-blank distance, encouraging a more aggressive approach than Mega Man’s traditional run-and-gun style. Capcom describes Proto Man as more technical, rewarding players who can move into dangerous positions and use his abilities precisely.

The Proto Shield is central to that design. It can be used defensively, but Dual Override also turns it into an offensive tool through a collection of special Shield Actions. Proto Man will gradually unlock new attacks after defeating bosses, providing him with a separate progression path from Mega Man, who continues the series tradition of acquiring Special Weapons from defeated Robot Masters.

Capcom says Proto Man will eventually build a versatile selection of Shield Actions that can be used directly rather than requiring players to switch between them individually. The trade-off is a new overheating mechanic: repeatedly relying on these abilities raises Proto Man’s temperature and can put additional strain on him. Players will therefore need to balance his stronger close-range options against the risk of overusing them.

That distinction expands on the playable Proto Man announcement included with Mega Man: Dual Override’s spring 2027 release window. Rather than making the second character an alternate skin or slightly modified version of Mega Man, Capcom is building separate combat philosophies and progression systems around the pair. Proto Man’s last playable appearance in the main classic series was Mega Man 10.

Both characters still share several of Dual Override’s larger progression mechanics. The new Custom Chip system includes more than 50 chips providing active abilities or passive effects, allowing players to tailor builds toward additional damage, survivability or other advantages. Those chips can be equipped by both Mega Man and Proto Man, meaning the game’s customization layer sits on top of their otherwise different base movesets.

The Override system is also available to both heroes. Activating Override temporarily pushes a character beyond their normal limits and substantially strengthens their abilities, but it leaves them vulnerable after the effect ends. Capcom’s latest footage shows Proto Man activating his own Override, although the developer has not yet fully detailed every advantage provided by his transformed state.

Dual Override will retain Robot Masters as a major part of its structure, with the game’s boss lineup already beginning to emerge. Steam achievement data previously exposed the apparent Robot Master lineup along with references to boss encounters, difficulty challenges and progression systems. Capcom has officially shown Twinkle Girl so far and has also confirmed that stages will be divided into three areas rather than following the traditional single-stage format used across much of the classic series.

That revised structure should give the two playable characters more opportunities to approach the same environments differently. Mega Man can rely on safer ranged attacks and the Special Weapons collected from Robot Masters, while Proto Man is built to close distance, use shield-based techniques and manage his temperature during more aggressive encounters. Custom Chips then allow either character to be adjusted further without eliminating those core differences.

Mega Man: Dual Override launches in spring 2027 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC. Capcom has not announced an exact release date, but its latest Proto Man breakdown makes clear that the second playable character is being treated as a distinct way to experience the campaign rather than a simple alternate hero.
