Call of Duty HQ is reportedly preparing for another major file reorganization on PlayStation 5, with its base package dropping from roughly 160 GB to 21.933 GB in Sony’s backend. The new measurement comes from PlayStation Game Size, which tracks changes uploaded to the PlayStation Network database. The tracker believes the update is preparing Call of Duty HQ for Modern Warfare 4, although Activision has not officially confirmed that connection.
The reported 21.933 GB figure should not be interpreted as the total storage requirement for every Call of Duty mode and game installed through the launcher. Call of Duty HQ separates its base application from additional content packs for multiplayer, Warzone and individual annual releases, meaning a player’s actual installation can remain substantially larger. The backend figure instead appears to represent the core HQ package before optional or game-specific files are added.
PlayStation Game Size says the package is currently around 160 GB before the upcoming reduction. According to the tracker, this type of sharp decrease has become part of Call of Duty’s annual transition process, with the launcher shrinking before the next major release and then growing again once the new game and its associated content are incorporated. The account therefore cautioned that the roughly 22 GB footprint is unlikely to represent Call of Duty HQ’s long-term size.

There is precedent for this kind of restructuring. In 2025, another PlayStation backend update reduced the PS5 Call of Duty HQ base package from around 126 GB to approximately 25 GB as Activision reorganized content ahead of Black Ops 7. Additional multiplayer and Warzone packs still had to be installed separately, so the headline reduction did not mean the full Call of Duty experience occupied only 25 GB.
Activision has also previously acknowledged that annual Call of Duty transitions can require large downloads specifically because existing files are being reorganized rather than simply supplemented with new content. During its Black Ops 6 preparation work in 2024, the company explained that major updates would restructure game files, separate certain content and introduce expanded texture-streaming technology. Activision said those changes could involve large initial downloads even if the completed installation ultimately occupied less storage.
The same distinction will be important if the newly discovered PS5 update is deployed ahead of Modern Warfare 4. A large download does not necessarily mean players are receiving tens or hundreds of gigabytes of completely new MW4 assets. Existing files can be replaced, compressed, moved into separate packs or reorganized so that the launcher is ready to accommodate the next annual release.
Modern Warfare 4 is officially scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Infinity Ward has already completed the game’s August open beta, which included multiplayer, a playable campaign mission and Warzone’s Zodiac Resurgence content. During that testing period, the studio made frequent balancing changes, including reduced aim assist during the second beta weekend and broader movement and weapon adjustments.
The upcoming full release will also use Call of Duty’s broader shared ecosystem, making an HQ-side update before launch unsurprising. Modern Warfare 4’s beta was distributed separately through platform storefronts, but Activision continues to use its central Call of Duty application and content-management structure for its live games. Players can remove individual modes and packs through the Manage Files system rather than keeping every supported Call of Duty component installed simultaneously.
Modern Warfare 4 itself has undergone several notable gameplay changes during testing, including removing Tactical Sprint from the default movement system and shifting it behind a perk. Those gameplay decisions are separate from the newly discovered storage restructuring, but both are part of the final preparation period leading into the October launch.
For now, the only concrete new information is the PlayStation backend measurement: Call of Duty HQ’s PS5 base package is reportedly set to fall from roughly 160 GB to 21.933 GB. PlayStation Game Size believes the change is connected to Modern Warfare 4 preparation, but Activision has not announced the update or explained exactly what files are being reorganized. The final storage requirement is also expected to increase again once Modern Warfare 4 and its additional content packs are integrated.
