Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown will launch on October 15, 2026, Pearl Abyss has confirmed. The expansion was shown during Sony’s September 3 State of Play with a new gameplay trailer highlighting sailing, underwater exploration, new enemies and expanded life-simulation systems. It will continue the story of Pywel with Kliff, Oongka and Damiane returning for a new set of adventures.

The expansion broadens exploration beyond the mainland by allowing players to take control of a ship and travel across the ocean. New islands can be discovered away from Pywel’s established coastline, while players will also be able to dive beneath the surface in search of underwater treasures, ruins and other hidden areas. The trailer additionally showed diving equipment designed for deeper exploration.

Pearl Abyss is also introducing new threats across both land and sea. The reveal included several large enemies and mechanical creatures, with some encounters taking place in areas that appear substantially different from the regions available in the base game. The developer says players will need to adapt their tactics as these new enemies introduce different combat challenges.

Charting the Unknown is expanding Crimson Desert’s non-combat systems at the same time. Players will be able to rent and manage facilities, earn money through those properties and make greater use of the upgraded Housing mode. Pearl Abyss is also adding more opportunities to interact with residents across Pywel, with those conversations contributing to deeper relationships with people encountered during the journey.

The housing expansion appears to go beyond simple decoration. Footage from the reveal shows larger structures and more developed living spaces, suggesting players will have additional control over how their home or base is arranged. Pearl Abyss has not yet provided a full breakdown of every building option or management system included in the expansion.

The story will continue through several new plotlines spread across Pywel. Pearl Abyss has teased an ominous presence in the desert, a political conflict, a journey connected to time and an ancient secret hidden beneath the sea. Kliff, Oongka and Damiane will each pursue their own paths as those events unfold, placing greater emphasis on the wider cast rather than focusing exclusively on Kliff.

That approach follows the structure established by the base game, which already uses multiple playable characters and interconnected storylines across its large open world. Charting the Unknown appears designed to expand that framework with additional regions and activities rather than replacing existing systems. Players who have already spent time exploring Pywel will therefore be returning to a familiar world with substantially more areas and mechanics layered onto it.

The announcement comes several months after Crimson Desert launched in March 2026. Pearl Abyss has continued updating the game since release, while community discussion has ranged from its technical performance to its unusually broad collection of open-world mechanics. The developer has also faced criticism during the game’s post-launch period, including controversy surrounding AI-generated assets that Pearl Abyss said were not intended to ship.

Charting the Unknown arrives at an important point for the game’s longer-term support. Despite strong attention around launch, player progression data showed a large portion of the audience had not reached the middle of the main story, making the expansion a chance to bring players back with new systems rather than relying only on additional quests. Its focus on sailing, housing and underwater exploration also broadens the game beyond straightforward combat encounters.

Preorders for the expansion are being offered across supported platforms. Pearl Abyss is including the Charter’s Diving Set for Kliff and Oongka and the Charter’s Light Diving Set for Damiane as preorder bonuses. The developer has also confirmed that Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown will not be available through the Mac App Store at launch, with any future Mac release to be announced separately.

Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown launches October 15, 2026. With new stories, ocean exploration, underwater areas, stronger housing systems and additional bosses, the expansion is positioned as a significant extension of Pywel rather than a small post-launch content pack.
