Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen reviews are now live ahead of the expansion’s October 9 launch, and early critical reception is strongly positive. Multiple outlets have awarded scores in the 8-to-10 range, while early aggregator figures place the expansion around the high 80s overall. Critics broadly agree that Dark Arisen substantially improves Capcom’s 2024 RPG while adding enough new material to stand as a major expansion rather than a small add-on.
Vice awarded Dark Arisen a 10/10, praising its new Norgan region, revised exploration systems and overall scale. The review described the expansion as large enough to feel like a standalone game, estimating more than 25 hours of new content and highlighting improvements to fast travel, loot and exploration. DualShockers also gave the expansion top marks, arguing that Dark Arisen elevates Dragon’s Dogma 2 by building on its original design rather than replacing it.
RPGFan was similarly enthusiastic, calling Dark Arisen the definitive version of Dragon’s Dogma 2 and praising how the expansion completes ideas that were already present in the base game. Early review roundups also include several scores in the 9/10 range and above, with RPGFan sitting at 9.5 in the circulating review lists. The overall pattern is notable because the original Dragon’s Dogma 2 was praised for its world design and emergent gameplay but also criticized for technical issues, limited convenience features and an uneven late-game structure.

Dark Arisen appears to address many of those complaints directly. The expansion introduces Norgan, a large snowy region designed around more dangerous enemies, layered vertical exploration and new questlines, while also expanding the game’s progression systems. Reviewers have highlighted the area’s stronger dungeon design, environmental variety and the greater sense of risk attached to exploration compared with much of the base game.
Combat has also received consistent praise. Critics point to new enemies, additional abilities and encounters that demand more careful use of vocations and Pawns, particularly at higher levels. Dark Arisen is designed for experienced players despite becoming accessible relatively early in the main game, with several reviews warning that players who enter the new region underleveled may face a sharp difficulty increase.
The expansion arrives alongside broader improvements to Dragon’s Dogma 2 itself. Capcom has spent much of 2026 revising movement, performance, fast travel and quality-of-life systems, while the Dark Arisen release is accompanied by another major update. The recent Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen main trailer also showcased the new monsters, environments and story content shortly before the review embargo lifted.
Not every element is receiving universal praise. Some reviewers still note familiar Dragon’s Dogma frustrations, including Pawn behavior, demanding combat and systems that intentionally resist convenience. The expansion therefore does not appear to transform the series into a more conventional open-world RPG, instead refining its existing identity while giving players more options around several of the original game’s most divisive mechanics.
Early aggregate figures reflect that generally positive consensus. Community-tracked review data currently places the expansion at roughly 88 on OpenCritic, while platform-specific Metacritic numbers have been circulating around 89 on PC, with lower but still positive averages on consoles. Those figures may shift as additional reviews are added, but the first wave suggests Dark Arisen is landing more consistently with critics than many major expansions manage.
The timing also gives Capcom another strong release heading into the final months of 2026. Dark Arisen follows a year in which the publisher has continued expanding several of its major franchises while revisiting older properties and updating existing games. For Dragon’s Dogma specifically, the expansion represents the largest post-launch addition since the sequel arrived in 2024.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen launches October 9 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Existing owners on PS5, Xbox Series and PC can purchase the expansion separately, while the Switch 2 release packages Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Dark Arisen together. Based on the first round of reviews, Capcom’s return to the Dark Arisen concept appears to have produced one of the better-received RPG expansions of the year.
