Playground Games has revealed how long players can expect to spend with the upcoming Fable reboot, putting the main quest at roughly 15 to 20 hours. The developer says side quests and open-world exploration should provide another 15 to 20 hours of content, potentially bringing a more completion-focused playthrough to around 30 to 40 hours before accounting for the game’s life-simulation systems. The estimate was shared during a Gamescom 2026 Q&A attended by Polygon.
Associate Game Director Will Kennedy provided the figures while discussing the overall structure of the new Albion. According to Kennedy, Fable contains around 15 to 20 hours of mainline quest gameplay and a similar amount of side content and open-world exploration. He also stressed that the game’s life systems do not have a fixed endpoint, meaning players who spend significant time building relationships, earning money or interacting with the world could extend their playtime substantially beyond those estimates.
That distinction is important because Playground Games is positioning Fable as more than a conventional story-driven action RPG. Players will be able to own property, work jobs, build relationships, marry characters and establish a reputation across Albion, with individual villagers reacting to the Hero’s actions. Those systems are designed to continue alongside the main story rather than disappear once a particular questline has been completed.
The approximate 15-to-20-hour main campaign also places the new game relatively close to the scale traditionally associated with the series rather than turning Fable into an exceptionally long open-world RPG. Playground has repeatedly emphasized player choice and replayability, with reputation, relationships and decisions changing how characters respond to the Hero. As a result, total playtime could vary significantly depending on whether players concentrate on the main narrative or spend more time engaging with Albion’s optional systems.
Recent Gamescom demonstrations have offered a clearer look at how those systems fit together. The game includes a fully explorable open world, branching conversations, melee and ranged weapons, magic and a more involved combat system than previous entries. Players can parry and dodge attacks, use spells alongside weapons and pursue activities outside the main quest, while NPCs maintain their own routines and opinions about the protagonist.
Fable is a reboot rather than a direct continuation of Lionhead Studios’ original trilogy, although Playground Games is retaining several of the series’ defining ideas. The new Albion still revolves around choice, consequence, British humor and the contrast between heroic adventures and ordinary life. Playground has also built what it calls a Living Population, with individual characters capable of forming opinions about the player’s behavior and reputation.
The game is now scheduled to release on February 23, 2027. It will launch on Xbox Series X|S, PC, Steam and PlayStation 5, making it the first mainline Fable game to appear on a PlayStation console. It will also be available through Game Pass, while buyers of the Premium Edition can begin playing up to five days earlier on February 18.
With the runtime estimate now public, players have a clearer idea of the scale Playground Games is targeting. A straightforward main-story run should fall around the 15-to-20-hour mark, while completing more optional quests and exploring Albion could approximately double that figure. Anyone investing heavily in Fable’s property, relationship and reputation systems may be able to spend considerably longer in the world beyond the developer’s more structured content estimates.
