Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi says he personally pushed for the game to receive a physical edition despite growing pressure across the industry toward digital-only releases. Speaking to Radio Times, Hamaguchi explained that he used his position to argue for a boxed version even though decisions about product formats and SKUs ultimately belong to Square Enix’s publishing team. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Hamaguchi said physical games still matter to him personally, recalling that he bought many boxed releases when he was younger and still prefers physical copies of games to which he feels particularly attached. He also noted that physical editions can have sentimental value for developers, such as being able to get a copy signed by friends or colleagues who worked on a project. At the same time, he acknowledged that digital distribution is becoming increasingly dominant, particularly on PC.

That shift made securing a physical version of Revelation more complicated. Hamaguchi said there is now significant pressure toward disc-less and digital editions, but that he argued for a physical release “as much as possible.” He also stressed that his authority has limits: as director, his primary responsibility is the content and quality of the game itself, while decisions about how the title is sold are handled by Square Enix’s publishing operation.

The compromise is that the physical version will not contain the complete game on the disc. Hamaguchi described the disc as containing the opening portion of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, after which players will be prompted to download the remainder of the game. He said he understands why some players are unhappy with that arrangement and specifically acknowledged fans who want a complete version available entirely on physical media.

Square Enix has nevertheless confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch in both physical and digital formats. The company’s Japanese announcement lists multiple boxed editions, including Standard, Deluxe, Collector’s and Complete Editions, while its North American store describes the Deluxe Edition as including a physical copy alongside an art book, soundtrack and SteelBook case. Nintendo Switch 2 will use a game-key card format rather than a conventional full-data cartridge.

Hamaguchi’s comments arrive as Revelation moves deeper into its pre-release campaign. Recent demonstrations have shown playable Vincent and Cid alongside new exploration and combat systems, while Square Enix has also confirmed quality-of-life additions such as an optional auto-level feature for players who skip side content. The game serves as the final entry in the remake trilogy that began with Final Fantasy VII Remake and continued with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Square Enix describes Revelation as the largest-scale entry in the trilogy, with the Highwind allowing players to travel freely across a broad world while Cloud and his companions prepare for their final confrontation with Sephiroth. The publisher has also confirmed physical pricing in Japan and multiple digital editions, including versions with early access and story DLC. The game will launch simultaneously across its announced platforms on April 8, 2027.

Hamaguchi stopped short of suggesting that physical media will remain unchanged indefinitely. He said he can imagine a future in which boxed releases still exist but contain only a code rather than a full game disc, reflecting the broader shift toward downloads. Even so, his comments make clear that Final Fantasy VII Revelation’s boxed edition exists at least partly because he argued for one internally, even if the final format falls short of the complete-on-disc release some collectors wanted.

For players focused on preservation and ownership, the distinction is significant. Revelation will have a physical edition, but that edition still depends on additional downloaded data to provide the full game. Hamaguchi said he understands the frustration around that compromise and summed up his role simply: he pushed for a physical option as far as his position allowed.
