Final Fantasy VII Revelation has received its first Tokyo Game Show 2026 hands-on report, providing a closer look at playable Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind, the new FITS combat system and the Whirlwind Maze. PlayStation Blog tested a combat-focused portion of the PS5 version that sends Cloud’s expanded party toward Sephiroth before culminating in a battle against Jenova Death. Revelation launches April 8, 2027 as the third and final entry in Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy.
The demo begins with Cid joining Cloud and the rest of the group, bringing the traveling party to eight members. The Whirlwind Maze is more physically involved than the equivalent environment in the original Final Fantasy VII, requiring players to shimmy along cliff faces and vault over ledges while following black-robed figures deeper into the area. Howling winds and aurora-like light surround the route as the party approaches Sephiroth.
Vincent is fully playable and switches between ranged gunplay and a monster transformation. Consecutive firearm hits evolve his unique abilities from Blood Moon to Execration and then Retribution, increasing their power as his hit count rises. Holding R1 transforms Vincent into a beast that moves on all fours and attacks enemies with its claws, while holding Triangle in this form helps stagger targets more quickly.

The transformation can be maintained indefinitely, but it carries a growing drawback. Vincent’s Chaos level rises the longer he remains transformed, progressively reducing his maximum HP and encouraging players to alternate between his human and monster forms rather than remaining in one state. The result gives Vincent a distinct risk-and-reward fighting style built around switching between ranged attacks and aggressive close-quarters combat.
Cid approaches battles differently, using his spear to control space and attack from the air. Well-timed Square inputs during his standard attack sequence can branch into moves including Dragon Spin, Hyper Dive and Ground Pound, while Target Spear allows him to pin enemies with up to five charged spears. Those embedded spears then strengthen abilities such as Skydive and Burst Spiral, adding another layer to how his attacks can be chained together.
The demo also provides more detail on FITS, short for Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear. The system offers four specialized roles — Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner — that provide different capabilities according to the equipped uniform. Square Enix had previously introduced FITS as one of Revelation’s major combat additions alongside Vincent and Cid, but the TGS build demonstrates more clearly how it operates during ordinary encounters.
Cloud begins the demo with Summoner FITS equipped. Selecting its FITS command temporarily calls powerful summons including Ifrit, Shiva and Titan into battle, while activating the command again during the summon triggers a high-damage move called Pledge Roar. That additional attack consumes HP, giving its considerable offensive power an immediate cost rather than functioning as a free burst of damage.
Deeper into the Whirlwind Maze, the party encounters tougher enemies including Dragon Riders and Gigas before Sephiroth appears and the sequence transitions into a confrontation with Jenova Death. The redesigned boss attacks large sections of the battlefield with fireballs and scorching gusts before growing tentacles that shield its main body. Players must destroy those appendages to resume dealing direct damage, with the tentacles later gaining flamethrower-style attacks of their own.
The hands-on session ultimately defeated Jenova by combining Synergy Abilities and Limit Breaks. Together with the traversal changes, new party members and FITS system, the sequence suggests Revelation is continuing to expand the combat framework established by Remake and Rebirth rather than simply carrying their mechanics into the trilogy finale.
Revelation is scheduled to launch simultaneously for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC on April 8, 2027. Its physical console editions will require additional downloads, while the Switch 2 release uses a 130GB Game-Key Card. Beyond the trilogy’s conclusion, director Naoki Hamaguchi has also discussed an “ever-evolving future” for Final Fantasy VII, suggesting Square Enix does not view Revelation as the end of the wider project surrounding the game and its characters.
