Fortnite players can now stop in the middle of a Battle Royale match and play arcade games through interactive cabinets placed around the island. The feature became playable following the September 17 v42.20 update, turning a system discovered by dataminers several weeks ago into a live Battle Royale mechanic. ShiinaBR shared footage of the working cabinets after servers returned from the update.

Interacting with one of the machines temporarily shifts control away from normal Battle Royale gameplay and opens a 2D arcade game on screen. Earlier datamining of the system showed that a player’s Fortnite character is placed into a stationary state while the arcade session is active, meaning players cannot simultaneously move around the island or defend themselves normally. The session can be exited, while being eliminated or disconnected also ends the minigame.

Two arcade experiences had previously been discovered in Fortnite’s files. One is built around classic Pac-Man gameplay, complete with maze movement, dots, power pellets, fruit, lives, scoring and the familiar four-ghost structure. The other, called Arcade Volley in the files, is a Pong-style game that pits the player against an AI opponent and increases in difficulty as the match progresses.

The timing closely overlaps with Fortnite’s larger Pac-Man collaboration. Bandai Namco officially teased Pac-Man’s expanded appearance earlier this week, including changes around the Mega Maze landmark and the arrival of the Pac-Man Sidekick in the Item Shop on September 18. The crossover had already been partially represented on the Chapter 7 Season 4 map through locations such as Pac-Man Island, Blinky Island and Pinky Island.

Datamining before the feature went live also indicated that several cabinets would be dedicated to the Pac-Man-style game. The files described different ghost states, including their standard movement, frightened behavior after a power pellet is collected and the eyes-only state that follows when a ghost is eaten. A high-score system was also found, although Epic Games has not publicly detailed whether achieving particular scores awards Battle Royale loot or other rewards.

The unusual part of the feature is that these are not separate Fortnite Creative experiences or menu-based minigames. The cabinets exist within an active Battle Royale match, allowing players to voluntarily stop fighting and play a second game while the normal match continues around them. That creates an obvious risk, since spending time focused on an arcade cabinet can leave the player vulnerable to opponents elsewhere on the island.

Support discovered in the game files also covered keyboard and mouse, controllers and mobile devices, including dedicated touchscreen controls. The system therefore appears designed as a broader Fortnite mechanic rather than a one-off interaction built exclusively for a single platform. Whether Epic plans to expand the cabinet library with additional games after the initial rollout has not been announced.

The arcade system arrives as part of a particularly crowded v42.20 update. Kingdom Hearts content is also now reaching Battle Royale, including Sora’s Kingdom Key Mythic, while several other gaming collaborations are being introduced or prepared around the same update. Epic has also refreshed Loot Hacks, added new Sprite-related content and continued changing parts of the Chapter 7 Season 4 island.

Playable arcade cabinets had been known about since August, when dataminers uncovered their internal logic and control schemes, but they were not previously usable during standard Battle Royale matches. Their activation on September 17 is therefore more than another file discovery: players can now interact with the system directly in live games.

Epic Games has not yet published a detailed standalone explanation of the arcade feature or confirmed how long the current cabinets will remain available. For now, Fortnite’s Battle Royale island effectively contains playable games within the game itself, with Pac-Man-inspired maze gameplay and Arcade Volley providing the first examples of the new system.
