Grand Theft Auto VI will reportedly require PlayStation 5 system software version 14.22.00.00 or later to launch, following Sony’s latest console firmware update on November 2, 2026. The requirement was identified by PlayStation Game Size, an account that tracks changes to PlayStation Store backend data, ahead of the game’s scheduled November 19 release.
PlayStation Game Size shared the new firmware number on November 2, updating an earlier finding from the beginning of October that suggested GTA 6 would require version 14.10.00.00. The change indicates that the game’s listed minimum system software requirement has increased as launch approaches.
The information comes from PlayStation Store data rather than an official announcement from Sony or Rockstar Games. Neither company has independently confirmed firmware 14.22 as GTA 6’s final launch requirement, and the minimum could change again before release.

Sony released PS5 firmware version 26.07-14.22.00 on November 2, introducing additional security fixes. The update follows version 14.20, which arrived on October 21, and continues a series of system software revisions during a period of increased PS5 jailbreak research.
Sony’s official release notes provide little detail about the vulnerabilities addressed by the latest update. The company has not identified specific exploits patched by version 14.22 or announced any GTA 6-related security changes.
The timing has prompted speculation that Sony is attempting to prevent GTA 6 from running on older PS5 firmware versions that may be vulnerable to jailbreak exploits. However, there is no official evidence establishing that protecting Rockstar’s upcoming game was the specific reason for releasing firmware 14.22 or raising its reported minimum requirement.
Recent developments in the PS5 homebrew community have demonstrated growing interest in modifying the console’s software. Projects involving PS5 Linux compatibility and newer firmware support have also highlighted the importance of system software versions for users experimenting with alternative operating systems and console modifications.
For players keeping their PS5 consoles on older firmware to preserve compatibility with particular exploits or homebrew tools, the reported GTA 6 requirement presents a potential limitation. If the minimum version remains 14.22 at launch, consoles running earlier system software would need to be updated before the game could start through normal supported methods.
This is separate from Sony’s general recommendation that PS5 owners install the latest system software. Individual games can have their own minimum firmware requirements, meaning a console may need an update to run a particular title even when other installed games continue functioning on an older version.
For players already using the latest official PS5 firmware, the reported requirement should not introduce an additional compatibility obstacle. It does not establish that GTA 6 requires a PS5 Pro, nor does it indicate any change to the game’s supported console platforms.
The firmware discovery follows separate PlayStation Store data claims concerning GTA 6's reported 210GB PS5 download size and a November 12 preload date. Those details also remain unofficial until confirmed by Sony or Rockstar.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. With further PS5 firmware updates still possible before release, version 14.22.00.00 should be treated as the currently reported minimum rather than a guaranteed final requirement.
