GTA VI Will Make Players Earn Cash to Progress the Story

Grand Theft Auto VI will sometimes prevent the main story from progressing until players have raised enough money, according to new information from a hands-off demonstration at Rockstar North. IGN, which watched Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson play around 30 minutes of the game, reports that players will occasionally need to build up a specific amount of capital before the next run of main missions becomes available. That makes earning money in the open world more directly connected to campaign progression than it was in GTA V.

Rockstar appears to be using that requirement to push players toward criminal activities between major story missions. The main ways of raising cash shown or discussed during the demonstration include robbing stores and other businesses, stealing and selling vehicles, and carrying out larger bank robberies. Nelson separately explained that the recent Extended Look only briefly shows robberies despite them representing a substantial part of what players can and sometimes need to do between story missions.

The system means Jason and Lucia will not necessarily be able to move directly from one scripted mission to the next. At certain points, players may instead have to return to the open world, find money-making opportunities and accumulate enough cash for the story to continue. Neither Rockstar nor IGN has revealed the required amounts, how often these progression checks occur or whether players are free to meet every target using whichever money-making method they prefer.

Robberies themselves have been designed around different levels of risk and potential reward. During the Rockstar North demonstration, IGN saw situations where players could use explosives to open a safe quickly but damage some of the valuables inside. Taking the slower approach and finding the safe combination could preserve more of the loot, although the additional time increases the chance of police arriving while the robbery is still underway.

Stolen goods also do not automatically become spendable cash. Certain items must be taken to specialist fences, with different contacts handling categories such as jewellery and stolen vehicles. The system shares some similarities with Red Dead Redemption 2, where stolen valuables could be sold to fences instead of functioning like ordinary currency the moment they were collected.

Vehicle theft has similarly been expanded into its own progression system. Rockstar says some parked cars will initially be inaccessible because Jason and Lucia lack the tools needed to bypass their security, with more advanced equipment becoming available later in the story. Older or less secure vehicles may require something as simple as a slim jim, while more expensive modern cars can require technology such as a key cloner.

That makes the importance of money part of a wider effort to connect GTA VI’s open world more closely to its narrative. Rockstar has said it wants players to spend meaningful time away from conventional mission markers rather than treating side activities as disposable distractions. IGN’s demonstration included spontaneous opportunities appearing while travelling through Leonida, reinforcing the idea that open-world activity and campaign progression will overlap more frequently.

The approach also addresses a longstanding issue with money in some previous GTA campaigns. After major heists in GTA V, the protagonists could accumulate huge amounts of cash, reducing the importance of smaller robberies and other money-making activities later in the game. GTA VI appears to be structuring its economy so that having enough cash matters at specific points throughout Jason and Lucia’s criminal journey.

Exactly how restrictive those requirements will feel remains unknown because the press demonstration was hands-off and no outlet outside Rockstar has yet played the game independently. Rockstar has also not published a complete breakdown of GTA VI’s economy or mission progression systems. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
