Rockstar Games has revealed significantly more detail about three of Grand Theft Auto VI’s core systems, confirming major changes to police pursuits, character progression and the way players steal vehicles.
The information comes from IGN’s visit to Rockstar North, where co-studio head and head of development Rob Nelson demonstrated GTA VI in a hands-off gameplay session. IGN subsequently published a series of Rockstar Explains videos focused on individual gameplay mechanics.
One of the largest changes involves GTA VI’s wanted system. Crimes now need to be witnessed or trigger an alarm before law enforcement is alerted, rather than automatically producing an immediate police response in every situation.
Police can also gather information about Jason and Lucia during a pursuit. Depending on what officers or witnesses know, law enforcement may recognize the vehicle being used, the characters’ appearance and whether Jason and Lucia were seen committing a crime together.
That information gives players more options when trying to escape. Abandoning a known vehicle can reduce the usefulness of the police description, while Jason and Lucia can split up after committing a crime together to make themselves harder to track.
The traditional wanted stars remain, with GTA VI restoring a six-star maximum. However, the additional identification systems mean escaping police is designed to involve more than simply leaving their immediate search radius.
Rockstar is also bringing back deeper character-development mechanics associated with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Jason and Lucia’s bodies can visibly change according to how they are treated. Eating excessively can increase their weight, while exercise can build muscle over time. Lack of sleep and extended periods of partying can also affect their appearance.
These systems form part of Rockstar’s broader attempt to make player choices physically visible on the protagonists rather than limiting progression to equipment and money.
Vehicle theft is receiving an even larger mechanical overhaul.
Nelson explained that Rockstar felt the traditional process of walking up to almost any vehicle, pressing a button and immediately stealing it left too little room for progression or decision-making.
In GTA VI, different cars have different levels of security. Older or less protected vehicles can be relatively simple to break into, while more valuable models can require specialized tools.
The tools available include equipment capable of opening conventional locks as well as technology used to deal with more advanced electronic security. Players can inspect potential targets before attempting a theft, allowing them to judge a vehicle’s security level and value.
Some stolen vehicles can also contain trackers, introducing additional risk after the player successfully gets inside.
Rockstar has expanded what happens afterward as well. Stolen cars can be sold, while certain vehicles can instead be registered to Jason or Lucia and retained as personal vehicles rather than functioning as disposable transportation.
The changes make car theft itself a progression system, which is particularly notable for a series whose name has always revolved around stealing vehicles despite the act remaining relatively simple in previous entries.
Together, the three systems demonstrate how Rockstar is adding more consequences and intermediate steps to familiar GTA actions.
A crime can now generate information that follows the player beyond the initial scene, character habits can visibly affect Jason and Lucia, and stealing a desirable car may require preparation instead of a single button press.
The new details arrive alongside Rockstar’s GTA VI Extended Look, which showed approximately 26 minutes of footage captured from the PlayStation 5 version of the game.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Rockstar has not yet revealed every rule governing these systems, but the latest demonstrations make clear that several of GTA’s oldest mechanics are being substantially expanded rather than simply carried over from GTA V.
