ArenaNet and co-developer 2weeks have announced Guild Wars Afterlife, the first new premium downloadable content for the original Guild Wars in nearly 20 years. The expansion launches January 13, 2027, on PC, Steam, iOS and Android, introducing an ever-changing dungeon, cross-profession skill drafting and permanent progression rewards. Guild Wars Reforged is required to play the new content.
Announced on November 3, 2026, Afterlife marks the MMORPG’s first major paid content expansion since Guild Wars: Eye of the North in 2007. The announcement follows the release of Guild Wars Reforged, which modernized the original 2005 game and expanded its availability to mobile platforms.
The centerpiece of Afterlife is the Unformed, a dynamic dungeon located in Xotecha, a mysterious realm within the Mists of Tyria. Unlike traditional Guild Wars dungeons, the Unformed changes between runs, presenting different combinations of environments, encounters and bosses.

Players enter the dungeon using their existing characters and select a starting loadout before progressing through its challenges. Each successful encounter provides opportunities to draft additional abilities, gradually expanding the character’s available skills.
The system introduces a significant change to Guild Wars’ established character-building mechanics. Normally, characters select abilities from their primary and secondary professions. Afterlife removes those restrictions within its dungeon, allowing players to draft skills from any profession and create combinations unavailable through the game’s conventional skill system.
Because abilities are selected during each attempt, players can develop different builds across successive dungeon runs. The changing encounters and skill choices form the foundation of Afterlife’s replayable dungeon experience.
ArenaNet has also confirmed that progression extends beyond individual attempts. Completing dungeon runs unlocks rewards that influence future expeditions, alongside permanent rewards usable outside Xotecha in the broader Guild Wars experience.
The expansion introduces a new storyline centered on the Order of the Moonless Night, an organization responsible for guiding troubled spirits through the afterlife. Players travel to Xotecha after the Order becomes overwhelmed by lost souls transforming into hostile creatures known as Nightmares.
A mysterious group called the Cult of Odran further complicates the situation, while the disappearance of one of the Order’s elders becomes part of the unfolding narrative. Additional story details will emerge as players complete repeated journeys through the Unformed.
New environments include jungles, cenotes and floating ruins. Players will encounter Ancient Golems, Nightmares and other enemies associated with Xotecha. Dungeon expeditions support cooperative play with friends, while players can also bring henchmen.
Guild Wars Afterlife is available for prepurchase at $23.99, representing a 20% discount from its regular $29.99 price. Pricing may vary by platform and region. Players who prepurchase also receive the ancestral-themed Vestments of the Order costume as a bonus.
The expansion will return to its standard price when it launches on January 13, 2027. ArenaNet has released an announcement trailer demonstrating the new dungeon and gameplay systems.
Afterlife continues the revival of the original Guild Wars through ArenaNet’s partnership with 2weeks. More than 21 years after the original game’s debut, the expansion introduces a new approach to its profession-based combat system while allowing longtime players to continue using their existing characters.
