Indie gaming storefront itch.io has expanded its generative AI filtering options, allowing players to exclude games with disclosed AI-generated content from search results. The platform announced the change on November 3, 2026, adding disclosure-based filtering to areas of its website where the functionality was previously unavailable.

The update introduces a “No AI” option within the storefront’s filtering tools. Players can select the option under AI Assistance to narrow their results to projects that have not disclosed generative AI involvement. The expansion makes it easier for users to control which independently developed games and other digital projects appear while browsing.

Itch.io confirmed the change through its official social media accounts, explaining that generative AI disclosure filtering was being extended to additional parts of the website, including its search results page.

The filtering system relies on developers accurately declaring their use of generative AI. Projects carrying an AI-assisted disclosure can be excluded from filtered results, while projects without such a disclosure are not necessarily independently verified as AI-free.

The platform also maintains a “No AI” tag for projects whose creators explicitly state that generative AI was not used in their creative process. Selecting this category provides a more specific way to discover games and assets associated with that declaration.

The search update arrives alongside broader changes to itch.io’s content policies. The platform now requires creators publishing tabletop games, books, comics and soundtracks to complete an AI disclosure before creating or editing their project pages. These requirements extend disclosure rules already applied to other categories, including game assets.

Under itch.io’s published quality guidelines, generative AI content is not prohibited outright. Developers may use automatically generated materials when their involvement is clearly disclosed and the resulting content provides substantial value to users.

However, the platform restricts mass-produced uploads, projects generated predominantly by AI with minimal human involvement, and repeated variations of substantially identical automatically generated material. Projects violating these guidelines may be removed from public browsing and search listings.

The expanded filtering comes as digital gaming storefronts face increasing scrutiny over AI-assisted releases. A recent analysis found that 49.9% of games released on Steam in October 2026 disclosed generative AI use, highlighting how frequently developers are identifying AI involvement in new PC releases.

For itch.io users, the November 3 change provides more control over game discovery without introducing a blanket prohibition on AI-assisted development. Players can filter disclosed AI-assisted projects from search results, while developers remain responsible for accurately identifying generative AI involvement in their work.
