Blizzard has shared additional details on several of Overwatch’s major Season 5 changes, including Doctrine’s ability kit, Sombra’s move to Support, Roadhog’s latest rework and the new Watchpoint: Grímsvötn Escort map. Game director Aaron Keller and executive producer Ben Bell discussed the upcoming content during an Official Xbox Podcast recorded at BlizzCon 2026. The conversation also included a tease for a still-unannounced hero connected to Overwatch’s 2027 story.

Doctrine is Overwatch’s 54th hero and a vampire-inspired Support aligned with Doomfist. Keller explained that his primary weapon is a precise scepter capable of both healing allies and damaging enemies, giving the character a relatively high mechanical skill requirement. Doctrine can also dash while taking reduced damage and deploy a drone to an ally that heals them while increasing their attack speed.

A central part of Doctrine’s design is an ability that can empower his other tools in different ways. Enhancing his dash allows him to fly, while an empowered drone also heals Doctrine and provides him with the same attack-speed benefit. His empowered scepter gains piercing properties, potentially letting skilled players hit enemies positioned behind others. Keller described the character as having a high skill ceiling because players need to decide where and when to spend the limited charges used to modify his abilities.

Blizzard also expanded on Sombra’s major move from Damage to Support. She will retain Stealth, but her familiar ability-hacking functionality is being shifted so that disabling enemy abilities is tied to her Ultimate rather than being constantly available through her standard kit. The redesigned Sombra is intended to spend more time around teammates, providing healing while still being able to temporarily break away and play in the disruptive style traditionally associated with the character.

Roadhog’s changes take a different approach. Keller said the Tank is receiving an ability that lets him actively absorb incoming enemy damage rather than simply relying on his health pool, while his ability to quickly eliminate enemies after landing a hook is being reduced. Roadhog’s primary fire will operate on a two-hit cadence, creating a longer window between pulling an opponent toward him and delivering enough follow-up damage to secure an elimination. Blizzard’s aim is to give victims more opportunity to react instead of making successful hooks lead so consistently to immediate kills.

The developers also discussed Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, the new Escort map set at what Blizzard describes as the most secure prison on the planet. Located in Iceland, the facility previously held Doomfist and is where he first encountered Doctrine before recognizing his abilities and eventually bringing him into Talon’s orbit. The map takes place after a major battle at the prison, with environmental details connecting directly to the storyline shown around Doctrine’s introduction.

Those details include the remains of a Sentinel robot seen during the related cinematic and Doomfist’s former prison cell. Keller said additional Easter eggs are scattered throughout Grímsvötn, including clues about other characters who have been imprisoned there. The map is part of Season 5’s broader conclusion to Reign of Talon, Overwatch’s first year-long narrative arc.

Blizzard is already hinting at what follows that storyline. During the podcast, the developers showed another look at a mysterious character whose silhouette had previously prompted speculation following the 2026 Overwatch Spotlight. Keller declined to identify the character but confirmed that they will have an important role in the story coming next year.

The next Overwatch Spotlight is scheduled for February 2027. Bell said the presentation will not simply repeat the format of this year’s event and will include new gameplay, new heroes and additional features the team believes players have been requesting. For now, Season 5 is positioned as both the conclusion of the current Talon storyline and the transition point into Overwatch’s next major narrative phase.
