Perplexity Portable Computer is now available on Windows PCs equipped with compatible NVIDIA RTX hardware, expanding the local AI agent beyond its earlier Linux and DGX Spark support. The software is a local version of Perplexity Computer designed to plan and carry out multistep tasks while keeping much of the underlying work and sensitive data on the user’s machine. NVIDIA says Portable Computer is available through the Perplexity app on GeForce RTX PCs and RTX PRO workstations with at least 24GB of VRAM.

Portable Computer combines local models with the orchestration and tools needed to complete longer workflows rather than functioning only as a local chatbot. It can analyze information across files, organize data and handle recurring tasks while local processing does not consume Perplexity Computer credits. When a job needs stronger reasoning or access to cloud services, the agent can identify that requirement and ask the user for permission before sending information off-device.

The Windows release supports local models including Qwen 3.8 27B, which Perplexity has post-trained for use with Computer and optimized for NVIDIA RTX GPUs. NVIDIA says the setup is intended to remove much of the manual configuration normally associated with running local AI models, allowing users to start working without separately selecting inference software and assembling an agent stack. The company has been making a broader push toward easier local AI on RTX hardware, including faster inference tools, RTX Spark systems and software for distributing workloads across local machines.

Portable Computer can also work across connected services rather than being limited to files stored directly on the PC. NVIDIA lists Microsoft Outlook, OneDrive and Word alongside Google Drive, Gmail, Slack and GitHub as supported connectors. That allows an agent to combine locally processed information with actions involving external services, although those workflows can require data to leave the machine when a cloud-based connector is used.

NVIDIA gives several examples of how the system can be used. A developer could have Portable Computer inspect open GitHub pull requests, organize them by status and identify documentation that may need updating, while a business user could ask it to examine local financial records and trace recurring costs without first uploading the underlying documents to a chatbot. It can also analyze exported product or customer data locally before posting selected findings to a connected Slack workspace.

The Windows launch follows Portable Computer’s initial debut in August on NVIDIA DGX Spark. Perplexity originally described the product as a local-first version of its Computer agent in which the orchestrator, planner, tool routing, scheduler, task queue and local search index could all run on the user’s hardware. Support subsequently expanded to Linux PCs with suitable RTX GPUs, making Windows the next major step toward bringing the same approach to a much larger installed base of consumer and professional PCs.

Privacy is one of the main distinctions Perplexity is emphasizing with Portable Computer. Sensitive files can remain on the PC for tasks the local model is capable of handling, while cloud escalation is explicitly permission-based. The software also uses isolated sandbox environments for code and tool execution, carrying over security controls from the cloud version of Perplexity Computer.

Hardware requirements will limit access to higher-end RTX systems for now. NVIDIA specifies GeForce RTX and RTX PRO GPUs with at least 24GB of VRAM, meaning many mainstream gaming laptops and lower-memory desktop cards will not qualify. Support for NVIDIA DGX Station is also planned, although NVIDIA has not announced a date for that expansion.

The Windows release reflects a broader shift toward AI agents that can perform useful work without routing every step through remote servers. As local models improve and GPUs gain enough memory to run them effectively, products such as Portable Computer can move more document analysis, coding and workflow automation onto hardware users already own. Perplexity Portable Computer is available on supported Windows RTX PCs now through the Perplexity app.
