Sword of the Sea has already made a name for itself as one of the standout atmospheric adventures of the year, capturing attention with its serene visuals and emotional storytelling.

Despite being developed by an independent studio, the game quickly found its way onto major platforms and even secured a spot in a major subscription lineup at launch. However, a recent development surrounding the title has stirred curiosity within the gaming community.

Sony Sword of the Sea acquisition speculation has intensified after a recent European trademark filing unexpectedly listed both Sony Interactive Entertainment and Giant Squid as co-owners. This unusual partnership has caught the attention of industry watchers.

Since the game was never originally published or developed by Sony, it raises fresh questions about the company’s intentions regarding the IP or its developer.

Importance: The Sony Sword of the Sea acquisition highlights a growing trend of major publishers eyeing standout indie IPs, potentially shifting how platform exclusives and creative partnerships are formed in the industry.

    Joint Ownership Raises Questions

The rumor stems from a trademark submission made on October 7 in Europe, where Sony Interactive Entertainment and Giant Squid were both named as owners.

Sword of the Sea, an atmospheric indie adventure released on August 19 for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, also launched directly into the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog—despite Sony having no official publishing or development role at the time.

Giant Squid, an independent studio based in California, has always maintained creative control over its projects, which makes this new co-ownership filing particularly intriguing.

With no public announcement from either party, speculation now ranges from a potential IP transfer to the possibility that Sony may have quietly moved to acquire the studio itself.
