Witchbrook will support multiplayer between Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 when it launches on January 28, 2027. A developer has clarified that players using either Nintendo console will be able to play together from day one, reversing an earlier statement suggesting cross-generation multiplayer would arrive after launch.
The confirmation emerged through the official Chucklefish Discord server, where a member of the development team corrected an earlier message about multiplayer compatibility. Smash Jump first highlighted the updated statement, in which the developer confirmed: “Update: Switch 1 and 2 will be able to play together.”
The clarification resolves uncertainty surrounding multiplayer between Nintendo’s two console generations. Players who own the original Switch will be able to join friends using Switch 2 without everyone needing to own the same hardware generation.

However, the announcement specifically confirms compatibility between the two Nintendo versions. It does not establish whether players on Nintendo consoles will be able to connect with those using PC, PlayStation or Xbox. Cross-platform multiplayer involving those systems remains unconfirmed.
Witchbrook is a cooperative life-simulation RPG developed by Chucklefish alongside co-developer Robotality. Set in the seaside town of Mossport, the game follows students attending a magical college, where they can study witchcraft, develop friendships, explore the surrounding world and participate in everyday activities. Its multiplayer component supports cooperative play for up to four players.
Chucklefish confirmed the game’s January 28 release date during the October 28 Nintendo Indie World Showcase. The announcement also established that PlayStation 5 would join the previously revealed launch platforms.
Witchbrook is scheduled to launch simultaneously on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The digital edition will cost $24.99 in the United States, with regional pricing details to follow.
The developer has also confirmed that physical Standard and Collector’s Editions are planned for release after the initial digital launch, although specific availability dates have not been announced.
For players planning cooperative sessions across Nintendo’s two console generations, the latest clarification confirms that Switch-to-Switch 2 multiplayer will be supported immediately rather than requiring a later update. Details about broader cross-platform compatibility have yet to be announced.
