CD Projekt Red has released an extended gameplay look at The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past, showing around 12 minutes from Geralt’s upcoming final adventure. The footage offers a closer look at the new open-world region of Letten, expanded NPC behavior, combat improvements and Geralt’s new chain weapon. Songs of the Past is scheduled to launch in 2027 and is being co-developed by CD Projekt Red and Fool’s Theory.

The demonstration takes place in Letten, the homeland of Dandelion and the bard’s wealthy family. Geralt wakes after the local Belleteyn festivities before becoming involved in the search for his missing friend, eventually travelling with Dandelion’s cousin Lilla toward an ominous area known as the Garden of Thorns. CD Projekt Red describes Letten as an idyllic land shaped by rural traditions, but the expansion’s central story revolves around a darker secret beneath its peaceful appearance.

Letten is being designed as a fully explorable open-world region rather than a linear area built only around the expansion’s main quests. Level Design Lead Miles Tost has described the setting as a complete new region filled with quests, locations, characters and monsters, while previews from Gamescom indicate its scale is intended to be comparable to the type of substantial expansion seen with Blood and Wine. Villages shown during the demonstration also feature denser activity, with residents following more detailed routines and interacting more naturally with their surroundings.

Combat introduces one of the expansion’s most distinctive additions: a chain that Geralt can wield alongside his traditional witcher equipment. The weapon can be swung before targeting specific parts of an enemy, allowing Geralt to disrupt or expose opponents before following up with another attack. Its inclusion also has roots in earlier Witcher material, with Geralt’s use of a silver chain appearing in Andrzej Sapkowski’s stories and in the opening cinematic of CD Projekt Red’s original 2007 Witcher game.

The gameplay demonstration shows the chain being used against a new creature called the Swarmion. The monster protects itself with a swarm of hornets, requiring Geralt to separate it from that defensive covering before attacking effectively. In the sequence shown, the chain can be aimed at a specific part of the creature and used to pull it out of the swarm, highlighting how the new weapon is intended to add another tactical option rather than simply function as a replacement for Geralt’s swords.

Songs of the Past will also incorporate the improvements being introduced with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered. CD Projekt Red has said the remaster brings upgrades across visuals, performance, gameplay and character progression, with previously detailed changes including improved combat behavior and updated presentation. The remastered version launches on September 29, 2026 as a free upgrade for qualifying existing owners on supported platforms, while its improvements will carry forward into the new expansion.

The new footage follows Songs of the Past’s formal reveal at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25. CD Projekt Red first announced the expansion in May, confirming Geralt would return for another adventure more than a decade after The Witcher 3 originally launched. Fool’s Theory, which includes developers who previously worked on The Witcher series, is collaborating with CD Projekt Red on what the publisher now describes as the final chapter of Geralt’s Witcher 3 story.

Songs of the Past is currently planned for release in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. An exact release date has not yet been announced. With a completely new region, dozens of quests, new monsters, unique mutagens and the chain weapon, the latest gameplay suggests the project is being positioned as a full-scale Witcher 3 expansion rather than a smaller piece of post-launch content.
