The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past Reveals New Region and Monsters

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past has received its most detailed gameplay preview yet, revealing new monsters, quests, combat equipment and more from the expansion’s new region of Letten.

Insider Gaming saw around 45 minutes of the expansion during a behind-closed-doors Gamescom presentation, with a developer controlling Geralt while showing portions of the new story and world.

Songs of the Past brings Geralt out of retirement for another adventure, this time taking him to Letten, the homeland of his longtime friend Dandelion.

CD Projekt Red officially describes Letten as an idyllic region shaped by rural traditions, folklore, harvests and festivals, but with a dark secret hidden beneath its peaceful appearance.

The Gamescom demonstration provides more context for how that premise begins to unfold.

According to the preview, Dandelion disappears under mysterious circumstances, leaving Geralt and one of the bard’s relatives to investigate what has happened.

That search quickly introduces some of the new threats found in Letten.

The presentation included a monster called the Swarmion as well as a larger boss encounter against the Slumbering Knight, giving the expansion its own set of enemies rather than relying entirely on creatures from the original game.

Geralt also has access to new equipment.

One of the standout additions shown during the presentation was a chain-hook tool, which expands his combat options alongside the swords, Signs, bombs and other equipment familiar from The Witcher 3.

The preview also highlighted how closely Songs of the Past is tied to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered.

CD Projekt Red’s upcoming overhaul affects much more than resolution and texture quality. Insider Gaming reports visible changes to animations, lighting, combat presentation, the user interface and skill systems during the demonstration.

The Remastered update launches on September 29, 2026 and will be free for existing owners on qualifying platforms.

Songs of the Past itself will arrive later as a paid expansion in 2027.

The new region is intended to function as a substantial open-world destination rather than a small collection of missions.

CD Projekt Red says Letten will introduce new quests, characters and a complete Witcher storyline built around choices and consequences.

The structure has already drawn comparisons with Blood and Wine, which introduced the standalone region of Toussaint in 2016.

Insider Gaming similarly described Songs of the Past as feeling like a full expansion rather than a short epilogue, with new exploration opportunities, side content and its own visual identity.

CD Projekt Red is co-developing the expansion with Fool’s Theory, a Polish studio containing several developers who previously worked on The Witcher series.

The studio has described Songs of the Past as Geralt’s final chapter, although it has not confirmed that the expansion directly sets up The Witcher 4.

That distinction is worth keeping in mind. The Witcher 4 is now targeting 2028, but CD Projekt Red has not publicly established Songs of the Past as a narrative bridge into Ciri’s next mainline adventure.

Songs of the Past is currently scheduled for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.

The Witcher 3 itself has sold more than 65 million copies since its original 2015 release, making the decision to return with a new expansion more than a decade later particularly unusual.

The latest Gamescom presentation makes clear that CD Projekt Red is not simply adding another questline to the existing map. Letten brings a new open world, new monsters, new combat elements and a refreshed version of Geralt’s underlying gameplay systems.

Players will have to wait until 2027 to experience the full expansion, but the 45-minute presentation offers the clearest picture yet of what Geralt’s return to the Path will involve.
