Microsoft appears to be preparing a new Xbox gaming recap experience called Playback, potentially replacing the traditional Xbox Year in Review feature in 2026. Early images shared by Better xCloud developer redphx suggest the new experience will focus on players’ gaming history across Xbox’s 25-year lifespan rather than exclusively summarizing their activity from the past year.
On October 27, redphx shared an early look at Playback through an X post, revealing that the existing Xbox Year in Review webpage is expected to be replaced by a new experience at xbox.com/playback. The page is not publicly available yet, and Microsoft has not officially announced the feature.
The preview suggests that Playback will highlight historical information associated with Xbox accounts, including console ownership and gaming activity. One detail shown in the early experience concerns a player’s first Xbox console. However, redphx noted an apparent accuracy issue, explaining that the preview incorrectly identified an Xbox One despite their first Xbox console being an Xbox Series S.

Unlike the previous Xbox Year in Review, which concentrated on statistics from a single calendar year, Playback appears to take a broader approach. Earlier annual recaps allowed players to revisit their most-played games, gaming activity and achievements accumulated throughout the year.
The change follows the absence of an Xbox Year in Review experience in 2025. It remains unclear whether Playback will provide a separate breakdown of 2026 gaming statistics or concentrate entirely on historical account information.
The timing also aligns with Microsoft’s ongoing celebration of Xbox’s 25th anniversary on November 15, 2026. The company has already introduced anniversary-themed profile badges, community-created customization options and curated Xbox Game Pass collections celebrating games from different console generations.
Xbox’s renewed focus on its history also extends to achievements, with original Xbox games appearing in achievement lists ahead of a planned rollout.
For players with longstanding Xbox accounts, Playback could offer a different perspective on their gaming history by highlighting experiences across multiple console generations. However, the full range of statistics, account-history features and customization options has not been confirmed.
Microsoft has not announced a public release date for Xbox Playback, and it remains uncertain whether the new experience will completely replace the annual Year in Review format. Further details will depend on an official announcement or the feature becoming publicly accessible.
