You Are Empty: Absolute Edition launched on PC on October 27, 2026, bringing the 2006 first-person shooter back for modern Windows systems. Released to coincide with the original game’s 20th anniversary, the updated version introduces widescreen resolution support, controller compatibility, improved rendering, faster loading times and several gameplay adjustments. ZOOM Platform Media confirmed the release through an official Steam announcement, outlining the technical changes made to the cult-classic shooter.
Originally developed by Digital Spray Studios and Mandel ArtPlains, You Are Empty takes place in an alternate-history version of 1950s Soviet Kyiv. A mysterious catastrophe has caused most of the city’s population to disappear, leaving abandoned streets occupied by grotesque creatures. Players explore the devastated city, fight enemies and investigate the events behind the disaster.
The Absolute Edition preserves the original single-player experience while addressing compatibility problems associated with the nearly two-decade-old PC release. The modernization was developed with contributions from Jordan Freeman Group and ZOOM Platform Media, with Strategy First and BillionTech listed as publishers on Steam.

One of the most significant improvements is expanded display compatibility. The updated engine supports modern resolutions and widescreen aspect ratios, with interface elements, menus, weapons and videos adapting correctly instead of appearing stretched. Players can also adjust their field of view, enable an optional frame-rate limiter and configure graphics settings including up to 8x multisample anti-aliasing and 16x anisotropic filtering.
The development team has addressed numerous rendering bugs and crashes from the original release. According to its official release notes, loading times have improved by approximately 800%, although this figure comes from the developer rather than independent performance testing. Additional changes target inconsistent frame times, camera jitter and windowed-mode behavior.
GPU compatibility has also received attention. The team says rendering behavior is now consistent across NVIDIA, AMD and Intel graphics hardware. The modernization removes dependencies on deprecated Windows APIs and eliminates the need to install obsolete external prerequisites, helping the game run on contemporary PC configurations.
Controller support is another major addition. The Absolute Edition uses SDL to accommodate modern and older controllers, with three selectable control presets. Steam achievements have also been introduced, alongside the game’s supported localization options.
Several quality-of-life improvements change how players interact with the original shooter. The heads-up display can now be hidden using a hotkey or configured to fade automatically when players are not shooting. Camera bobbing has been reduced, while Molotov cocktails have received an adjustment to prevent accidental close-range explosions when players briefly press the attack button.
Sprinting has also been added in response to criticism of the original game’s slow walking speed. However, the developers acknowledge that You Are Empty was not originally designed around faster movement, meaning the new option may affect pacing in certain sections.
The release follows a broader trend of older PC titles receiving compatibility-focused updates rather than complete visual remakes. A similar approach was recently taken with the return of Ecstatica and Ecstatica II, which introduced modern display support, controller compatibility and other improvements for contemporary systems.
You Are Empty: Absolute Edition is available for Windows PC through Steam. The release focuses on preserving the original game’s atmosphere, combat and level design while removing technical limitations that made the 2006 shooter increasingly difficult to play on modern hardware.
