Grand Theft Auto VI’s newly revealed gameplay footage provides the clearest look yet at Rockstar’s redesigned HUD, including separate indicators for health, energy and Focus alongside icons connected to Jason and Lucia’s Criminal Profiles and relationship. The interface appeared throughout Rockstar’s official Extended Look, while subsequent hands-on preview information has helped clarify the purpose of several symbols that were initially open to interpretation.
One of the most obvious changes appears in the upper-left portion of the HUD, where GTA 6 uses three horizontal status bars. A heart icon represents health, a lightning-bolt symbol is associated with energy, and an eye represents Focus. The interface is contextual rather than permanently filling the screen, with different elements appearing or disappearing depending on what the player is doing.
Focus is particularly important because it connects to GTA 6’s slow-motion combat ability. During the Extended Look, activating the system slows the action while highlighting areas of an enemy’s body, with different colors indicating potential lethal or disabling shots. It resembles concepts used by Rockstar before, particularly Red Dead Redemption’s Dead Eye and Michael’s shooting ability in GTA V, although GTA 6 integrates the mechanic into its own broader combat system.
The character-switching interface contains another set of important symbols. Jason and Lucia appear as separate portraits, with an icon beneath each character corresponding to their individual Criminal Profile. Preview information has since established that this is not a traditional morality or Honor meter; instead, GTA 6 tracks what type of criminal each protagonist becomes based on how the player approaches crimes.
Those profiles can reportedly range through states including Professional, Aggressive, Violent and Psycho. Conducting crimes efficiently and avoiding unnecessary casualties can contribute toward a more professional reputation, while excessive violence pushes a character toward more extreme states. Because Jason and Lucia are tracked separately, the player’s behavior while controlling one protagonist does not automatically determine the other’s Criminal Profile.
A heart symbol displayed between Jason and Lucia’s portraits relates to their relationship. Rockstar’s gameplay presentation shows the pair interacting in ways that go beyond scripted mission dialogue, while hands-on reports describe texting, dates and other activities capable of affecting their relationship status. The interface therefore tracks two different behavioral systems at once: how each protagonist operates as a criminal and how Jason and Lucia’s relationship develops.
Rockstar has also redesigned the weapon interface. The weapon wheel includes distinct Weapons and Items sections, with the latter allowing equipment such as masks, sunglasses and hats to be managed without visiting a wardrobe. That becomes more significant when combined with GTA 6’s police and identification mechanics, since disguises and clothing can potentially affect the information law enforcement has about a suspect.
Other HUD elements shown in the Extended Look include a more detailed minimap, wanted-level information, ammunition counts and multiple money values. The minimap presents buildings with considerably more visual depth than GTA V’s flatter street layout, while much of the wider interface disappears during ordinary exploration. Rockstar appears to be prioritizing a relatively clean screen until information becomes relevant to the player’s current activity.
Some symbols visible in the footage remain dependent on context, and Rockstar has not published a complete official HUD legend explaining every icon. The Extended Look itself does, however, confirm the visual interface, while subsequent preview discussions have provided more direct explanations for systems such as Focus, Criminal Profiles and Jason and Lucia’s relationship.
The result is a HUD that communicates far more than health, ammunition and police attention. GTA 6’s interface reflects several systems running beneath the open world, including physical condition, combat abilities, criminal behavior and the relationship between its protagonists. With Grand Theft Auto VI scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar’s latest footage is beginning to show how those systems will be presented during normal play.
