Sonic Team Explains Why Sonic Can Use Guns in Fortnite

Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has explained why Sonic can wield firearms in Fortnite despite Sega’s long-standing rule against the character using guns. Speaking in a new interview with IGN, Iizuka said the version of Sonic appearing in Fortnite is technically “Android Sonic” rather than the original character. Creating that distinction allowed Epic Games to integrate Sonic into Fortnite’s normal combat without changing how Sega treats the character elsewhere.

According to Iizuka, Epic first approached Sonic Team more than two years ago about bringing Sonic into Fortnite. The collaboration presented an immediate problem because Fortnite’s standard gameplay expects playable characters to use firearms, while Sonic Team considers Sonic a character who should never hold a gun. The eventual solution was to create an android version specifically designed to operate within Fortnite’s rules.

The distinction extends beyond weapons. Because Fortnite’s Sonic is an android rather than the original character, he can move at the same speed as other Battle Royale Outfits instead of possessing Sonic’s usual extreme speed. He can also interact with Fortnite’s movement systems normally, including swimming at the surface of water, despite the traditional Sonic character having different limitations across his own games.

Sonic currently headlines Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override and is available through the Battle Pass alongside a Super Sonic style. Epic also introduced Tails as a Sidekick, while Shadow, Knuckles and Dr. Eggman have subsequently appeared through the Item Shop. The season itself is built heavily around gaming crossovers, an idea that was visible even before launch through [[LINK|[https://www.techtroduce.com/fortnite-chapter-7-season-4-gaming-legends-theme/|early Chapter 7 Season 4 crossover findings](https://www.techtroduce.com/fortnite-chapter-7-season-4-gaming-legends-theme/|early Chapter 7 Season 4 crossover findings)]] involving franchises including Sonic, Persona and Tetris.

Iizuka’s explanation also helps clarify why Sonic’s Fortnite model differs somewhat from the character’s more familiar proportions. Fortnite’s playable Outfits need to fit a shared character framework for animation, movement and combat, so Android Sonic has noticeably longer legs and proportions better suited to the game. Framing the character as a separate android gives Sega and Epic more flexibility to make those adjustments without presenting them as permanent changes to Sonic himself.

The decision is particularly notable because Sonic Team has historically drawn a clear line between Sonic and other characters when it comes to firearms. Shadow the Hedgehog famously used guns in his 2005 game, but Iizuka has continued to maintain that Sonic himself is different in that respect. The Android Sonic explanation effectively preserves that rule while still allowing Sega’s mascot to participate fully in a game where shooting is a core mechanic.

Fortnite has also built Sonic into gameplay beyond simply offering the character as an Outfit. Chapter 7 Season 4 includes Green Hill Zone-inspired areas and Sonic’s Power Sneakers, while [[LINK|[https://www.techtroduce.com/fortnite-sonic-power-hours-storm-scout-sprite/|Sonic Power Hours](https://www.techtroduce.com/fortnite-sonic-power-hours-storm-scout-sprite/|Sonic Power Hours)]] have increased Sonic-related encounters and introduced additional seasonal rewards such as the Storm Scout Sprite. Those additions make the collaboration one of the more extensive gaming crossovers in the current season.

Iizuka’s comments establish that Sega considered Fortnite’s gameplay requirements well before approving the crossover rather than simply relaxing its restrictions on Sonic. Android Sonic functions as a separate version that can use weapons, swim normally and conform to Fortnite’s movement systems while the original character remains unaffected. Shadow and Knuckles appearing in Fortnite are likewise presented as android versions, according to the explanation surrounding the collaboration.

For players wondering whether Sonic wielding an assault rifle represented a broader change in Sega’s rules for the character, Iizuka’s answer is therefore straightforward: it does not. Sonic Team still views the original Sonic as a character who will not use guns. Fortnite gets around that restriction by giving players an android counterpart built specifically for Epic’s Battle Royale.
