Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has explained why Sonic can wield firearms in Fortnite despite Sega’s long-standing rule against the character using guns. The eventual solution was to create an android version specifically designed to operate within Fortnite’s rules.
The distinction extends beyond weapons.
