Remedy Entertainment has detailed Control Resonant’s expanded Assist Mode ahead of the game’s September 24 launch, giving players extensive control over individual combat mechanics rather than relying solely on traditional difficulty settings. The system can make encounters easier or harder, with options covering enemy aggression, damage, dodge timing, projectile speed and supernatural ability recovery. More extreme assists including Immortality, One-Hit Kills and One-Hit Falters are also available.

Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov explained that the system was built around Control Resonant’s new melee-focused combat, which centers on Dylan Faden’s shapeshifting weapon, the Aberrant. Enemies require players to respond to attacks, manage stagger and status effects and correctly time dodges, creating a different learning curve from the original Control’s more firearm-focused combat. Remedy therefore wanted players to be able to adjust whichever individual element was causing difficulty without necessarily changing the rest of the experience.

Enemy Aggression can be reduced for players struggling when several opponents attack simultaneously, while the Perfect Dodge Window can be widened to make defensive timing more forgiving. Enemy Projectile Speed is separately adjustable, and players can change Incoming Damage, Outgoing Damage and Outgoing Falter, the latter determining how quickly Dylan can break an enemy’s posture. Enhanced Melee Magnetizing can also be increased to make positioning during close-range attacks less demanding.

Supernatural abilities have their own assistance setting through Power Recovery Speed, letting players replenish the resource more quickly during combat. Players who would rather prioritize exploration and the story can go considerably further by enabling Immortality or One-Hit Kills. One-Hit Falters provides another option by allowing enemy posture to be broken immediately without necessarily killing the target outright.

Unlike the original Control’s Assist Mode, Resonant’s settings can also increase the difficulty. Players can raise Enemy Aggression, increase Incoming Damage or make the Perfect Dodge Window narrower than its default setting, allowing the same system to create a more demanding combat experience. Remedy says the change reflects its goal of making Assist Mode a broader customization system rather than something designed exclusively to lower difficulty.

The studio also deliberately avoids presenting the Assist Mode configuration screen before players have experienced the game. Instead, the feature can be enabled or disabled at any point during a playthrough, allowing players to first learn the intended combat rhythm and make changes afterward. Presets designed around different play styles are available as a starting point before individual settings are fine-tuned.

Using Assist Mode will not prevent players from earning trophies or achievements. Remedy says no trophies or achievements are gated behind the feature, meaning options such as Immortality and One-Hit Kills can be used without locking players out of progression rewards. That is particularly notable with Control Resonant’s Steam achievements having already surfaced ahead of release.

Remedy’s approach follows the accessibility philosophy established in the first Control, but substantially expands how precisely players can modify the experience. Rather than defining one universal “easy” or “hard” setting, Resonant separates mechanics that affect reaction timing, damage, enemy behavior and resource management. Players can therefore lower difficulty in one area while leaving another untouched, or even combine easier and harder settings in the same playthrough.

Control Resonant launches September 24 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with the sequel shifting the playable role from Jesse Faden to her brother Dylan. The game takes place in a Manhattan distorted by paranatural forces and introduces a more melee-driven action RPG structure built around the Aberrant and Dylan’s supernatural abilities. On PS5, a reported 89 GB download and September preload window have also surfaced ahead of launch.

With Assist Mode, Remedy is effectively allowing players to decide how closely they want to follow the game’s default combat balance. Those looking primarily for the story can dramatically reduce combat friction, while players seeking additional challenge can push certain systems beyond their standard difficulty. The expanded settings will be available when Control Resonant launches on September 24.
