Epic Games is letting Fortnite players help decide the competitive format for FNCS 2027, with the community choosing between Duos and Trios. Voting is taking place inside Fortnite through the Legends Landing island, where players can cast a vote for their preferred team size. Epic plans to announce the winning format during the 2026 Fortnite Global Championship.
The vote is being hosted on Legends Landing, Epic’s official FNCS viewing and community island, using island code 2325-4055-3398. Players can enter the map through Fortnite’s Discover menu and choose between the two formats there. The island has been used previously as a dedicated space for watching FNCS broadcasts, exploring the Hall of Legends and participating in competitive-themed activities.
The choice will determine whether Fortnite’s premier competitive circuit continues with Duos in 2027 or returns to Trios. Epic’s official FNCS page currently describes the series as Battle Royale with building, while noting that team size can vary between Duos and Trios depending on the year. That makes the vote more consequential than a simple community poll, since the selected format would affect roster construction, qualification strategies and team dynamics across an entire FNCS season.
Fortnite has moved between the two formats several times in recent years. The 2024 FNCS season used Duos, while Epic switched to Trios for 2025 before returning to Duos for 2026. Changes of this scale can reshape the professional scene significantly because established teams may need to find or drop a third player depending on which format is selected.
Epic has already made several significant adjustments to competitive Fortnite during 2026. The company moved this year’s Fortnite Global Championship to September 26 and 27 in Antwerp, Belgium, while also changing the FNCS schedule and converting Major 3 into a Last Chance tournament for Global Championship qualification. Epic additionally confirmed a standalone FNCS Solos tournament for October, giving competitive players another format after the main championship concludes.
Those changes have arrived alongside smaller competitive adjustments throughout the year, including tournament-specific rule decisions and temporary gameplay changes. Epic recently temporarily enabled the Mega Buster in Ranked and competitive playlists while addressing a crash affecting the Mega Man Cup. The publisher has also faced scrutiny over enforcement decisions, including a situation where Epic acknowledged an error involving tournament disqualifications but declined to reinstate the affected players.
Allowing the community to decide the following year’s FNCS team size is unusual because major esports formats are normally determined directly by the organizer. Competitive players tend to build long-term partnerships around the expected structure, so switching between Duos and Trios can have consequences well before the first tournament begins. Announcing the result at the Global Championship will give players several months to reorganize before the 2027 FNCS season begins.
The timing also makes the vote part of Epic’s broader effort to turn Legends Landing into more than a viewing space. The official island already lets players watch FNCS action, explore competitive history and participate in Duos Boxfights and Zone Wars. Using the same map to decide a future FNCS format gives the island a direct role in shaping competitive Fortnite rather than simply presenting it.
Epic has not yet published a detailed breakdown of how votes will be counted, whether each account can vote repeatedly or how long the voting period will remain open. The community posts promoting the vote say players can participate through Legends Landing, while the final result will be revealed at the Fortnite Global Championship. Until then, Duos and Trios remain the two possible formats for FNCS 2027, with the final choice now in the hands of Fortnite’s players.
