Fortnite Temporarily Enables Mega Buster in Ranked and Competitive

Fortnite has temporarily enabled the Mega Buster in Ranked and competitive playlists as Epic Games works around a crash affecting the ongoing Mega Man event. Fortnite Status confirmed the change on September 8, saying the weapon is being allowed into competitive playlists for the duration of the event and will be disabled again once it is complete. The adjustment is therefore temporary rather than a permanent change to Ranked or tournament loot pools.

The timing directly overlaps with the Override Series: Mega Man Cup, which is taking place across multiple regions on September 8 and September 9 depending on local scheduling. Epic’s official competitive page lists Battle Royale and Zero Build Duos events, alongside a separate Mobile Cup, with the standard Cup requiring five Mega Buster eliminations to earn the Override Buster Blast Spray. That makes the weapon unusually important to the tournament because it is tied directly to one of the event’s cosmetic objectives.

The temporary enablement also addresses an issue that had already created confusion around the Cup. Players had noticed that the tournament required five Mega Buster eliminations for the Spray reward even though the weapon was reportedly unavailable in the relevant competitive loot pool. Epic has now confirmed that the Mega Buster is being switched on in competitive modes while it resolves the crash affecting the event.

Fortnite Status did not provide technical details about the underlying crash. The official message only says that enabling the Mega Buster in competitive playlists is necessary to resolve the problem in the upcoming event and that the weapon will be re-disabled tomorrow once the event is finished. That suggests the temporary loot-pool change is functioning as a workaround rather than a broader balance decision.

The Mega Man Cup itself is now officially listed by Epic after initially surfacing through datamining. Earlier files had already revealed the Duos format and Mega Man cosmetic rewards, including the Override Buster Blast Spray challenge. Epic’s competitive page now confirms those details and shows region-specific sessions for Battle Royale, Zero Build and mobile players.

Top-performing competitors can also earn exclusive Mega Man-themed cosmetics through placement thresholds that vary between regions and events. The tournament sits within Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, which has built much of its seasonal content around gaming crossovers and special weapons. The Mega Buster is one of the season’s most prominent crossover items and is central to the tournament’s theme as well as its elimination challenge.

The change matters beyond the Cup because competitive Fortnite normally keeps tighter control over its loot pool than standard Battle Royale. Temporarily introducing an item specifically to keep a tournament functioning can affect match strategy, especially when that weapon was previously unavailable to Ranked and competitive players. Epic has not indicated that the Mega Buster will remain in those modes after the event ends.

The Mega Man collaboration is also moving through a wider rollout this week. Epic has already activated the competitive events, while separate leaks have pointed to a September 10 Item Shop release for the crossover cosmetics. The reported Mega Man Item Shop timing remains separate from the competitive loot-pool change, but both are part of the same Override crossover push.

For now, Ranked and competitive players should expect the Mega Buster to remain available only temporarily. Epic says the weapon will be disabled again after the Mega Man event is complete, returning the competitive loot pool to its previous state. Unless another technical issue emerges, the current change appears limited to keeping the September 8–9 tournament sessions operational.
