The Last of Us Season 3 is currently being planned as the HBO series’ final season, according to HBO and HBO Max chairman and CEO Casey Bloys. Speaking to Deadline after the 2026 Emmys, Bloys confirmed that the third season remains scheduled for 2027 and said showrunner Craig Mazin appears to have designed it as the conclusion. Bloys was asked when The Last of Us would return and said the next season would arrive in 2027, although HBO does not yet have a specific premiere date. When questioned about whether the network was still avoiding calling it the final season, he responded that he believes Mazin has planned it that way. The wording is more definitive than Bloys’ comments earlier this year, when he said Season 3 “certainly” appeared likely to be the end but deferred the final decision to the show’s creative team. That represents a notable shift from the possibilities Mazin discussed while Season 2 was being released. In 2025, he said adapting the remainder of The Last of Us Part II could require another one or two seasons, and later argued there was “no way” to complete the narrative in just a third season. Season 2 only adapted part of The Last of Us Part II, concluding with the narrative poised to shift perspective toward Abby. Kaitlyn Dever is expected to take a much larger role in Season 3, with Mazin previously confirming that the upcoming season would effectively place Abby at the center of the story. Jorge Lendeborg Jr. has taken over the role of Manny after Danny Ramirez departed because of scheduling conflicts, while Clea DuVall joined the cast as a Seraphite. Ending with Season 3 would require Mazin to cover considerably more of Part II’s remaining material than previously suggested. The second game tells overlapping stories from Ellie and Abby’s perspectives before eventually moving beyond their Seattle conflict, and Season 2 deliberately stopped before much of Abby’s side had been explored. HBO has not revealed the Season 3 episode count or explained how the remaining story will be structured if this is indeed the final run.
There is also no indication that HBO intends to extend the adaptation beyond the existing games with an original continuation. For now, HBO’s position stops just short of formally branding Season 3 as the series finale. Bloys’ latest comments nevertheless provide the strongest indication yet that the plan has settled on three seasons rather than four.
