IGN Reportedly Hit by New Layoffs Across Multiple Departments

IGN has reportedly been hit by another round of layoffs affecting multiple departments, with longtime video hosts Seth Macy and Brian Altano among those said to have been let go. Kotaku reported the cuts on September 14, citing sources familiar with the situation, while noting that the total number of employees affected is not yet clear. IGN had not publicly commented on the report at the time of publication.

Macy and Altano are two of IGN’s longest-running on-camera personalities, making their reported departures especially notable. Altano has worked at IGN since 2009 and has been a prominent host across the site’s video programming, including Podcast Beyond and Nintendo Voice Chat. Macy has likewise appeared extensively across IGN’s Nintendo coverage and other video and podcast programming over the years.

According to Kotaku, the latest cuts extend beyond those public-facing roles and have affected several parts of the company’s business. The report says employee location may have played a role in some cases, particularly whether staff were working remotely and whether they were willing or able to relocate. That detail has not been confirmed by IGN, and the precise criteria used for the layoffs remain unclear.

The September reductions follow another smaller round of cuts at IGN earlier this summer. Kotaku reports that engineers were among employees laid off shortly after IGN Live, the company’s Los Angeles event held around Summer Game Fest. The latest cuts therefore appear to represent a continuation of workforce reductions rather than a single isolated restructuring.

IGN has also faced previous layoffs under parent company Ziff Davis. In August 2025, the IGN Creators Guild said eight members of its bargaining unit had been laid off, representing about 12% of the unionized group at the time. The guild criticized those reductions and continued pushing for stronger job protections as part of its labor negotiations with the company.

The wider games-media business has been under sustained pressure from layoffs, consolidation and shifting advertising conditions for several years. IGN itself has expanded through acquisitions while simultaneously reducing staff in parts of its organization, a combination that has drawn criticism from employees and labor representatives. The company acquired Gamer Network’s portfolio in 2024, bringing outlets including Eurogamer, GamesIndustry.biz and Rock Paper Shotgun under IGN Entertainment.

The reported departure of Altano is particularly significant because of his long association with IGN’s PlayStation and Nintendo programming. He became one of the recognizable faces of Podcast Beyond following earlier host changes and has continued appearing across major event coverage and interviews. Both Altano and Macy were still appearing together on Nintendo Voice Chat episodes as recently as August and September 2026.

Kotaku’s report also says Altano had recently been involved in IGN’s coverage of San Diego Comic-Con, illustrating how close the layoffs came to active editorial and production work. That follows a recurring concern in games media, where cuts have often arrived shortly after major events or periods of heavy coverage. The report does not establish that those events caused the layoffs, but the timing adds to uncertainty around staffing across IGN’s editorial and production teams.

It is not yet known how the cuts will affect specific shows, podcasts or departments going forward. IGN has not announced replacements, cancellations or broader programming changes tied to the reported departures, and Kotaku said the overall scale of the layoffs remained unknown. Until the company provides more detail, the confirmed picture is limited to Kotaku’s reporting that multiple departments have been affected and that Macy and Altano are among the employees leaving.

The latest cuts add another significant round of job losses to the games-media sector and remove two veteran personalities who have been closely associated with IGN for years. More details may emerge as affected employees speak publicly or IGN addresses the restructuring directly.
