Fortnite’s newly released Kingdom Hearts crossover trailer appears to show Sora using the Kingdom Key to cast Thundaga, revealing that the upcoming weapon may support magic in addition to its melee attacks. The brief sequence shows Sora raising the Keyblade before lightning strikes the battlefield, closely matching the thunder magic associated with him throughout Kingdom Hearts. Epic Games has not yet published a full breakdown of the weapon’s abilities, so additional spells remain unconfirmed.

The footage adds an important gameplay detail to a crossover that had previously been defined mostly by its characters and cosmetics. Epic already confirmed earlier in Chapter 7 Season 4 that Kingdom Hearts’ Kingdom Key would arrive later in the season as an in-game weapon, while the latest Kingdom Hearts trailer also revealed Sora, Riku, Kairi and Roxas in Fortnite. The new lightning sequence suggests the Keyblade will function as more than a reskinned melee weapon.

Sora’s use of thunder magic is firmly established within Kingdom Hearts itself. Across the series, he can learn progressively stronger Thunder spells, culminating in Thundaga, which calls down powerful lightning on enemies. The visual shown in Fortnite appears consistent with that ability, although Epic has not formally labeled the attack or explained how it will work mechanically in Battle Royale.

It is also unclear whether the Kingdom Key will cycle between multiple forms of magic. Earlier rumors surrounding the crossover had claimed the weapon could incorporate fire, ice and thunder abilities, but those claims were never officially confirmed. The new trailer provides the strongest evidence so far that at least one elemental spell is part of the weapon’s Fortnite implementation, but there is currently no verified footage showing Firaga, Blizzaga or healing abilities.

That distinction matters because Fortnite crossover Mythics can vary substantially in complexity. Some collaboration weapons largely reproduce one signature attack, while others provide several abilities through alternate inputs, cooldowns or selectable modes. If the Kingdom Key includes multiple spells alongside melee attacks, it would make it one of the more feature-rich gaming crossover weapons introduced during Override.

Epic initially teased the crossover by confirming Sora was coming to Fortnite this week, before subsequent footage revealed the wider Kingdom Hearts cast. The collaboration is expected to launch on September 17 and includes Sora, Riku, Kairi and Roxas, all represented using designs associated with the main Kingdom Hearts series. Sora’s Kingdom Key has also been modified for Fortnite, replacing its familiar Mickey-shaped keychain with a llama-themed charm.

The weapon itself was actually signposted before any of those character reveals. Epic’s Chapter 7 Season 4: Override announcement listed the Kingdom Key among the special crossover items planned for later in the season, alongside weapons such as Rebecca’s Guns from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Until the trailer, however, the company had provided almost no information about what the Keyblade would do once players picked it up.

The Kingdom Hearts rollout is also expanding outside the main character cosmetics. A Gummi Ship vehicle crossover has surfaced for Fortnite and Rocket League, while the broader collaboration is expected to include additional themed items when it goes live. Epic has not yet released complete pricing or bundle information for every Kingdom Hearts cosmetic.

For now, the trailer establishes that Sora can apparently channel lightning through the Kingdom Key in Fortnite, strongly indicating a Thundaga-style ability is built into the Mythic. Whether that spell is one part of a larger magic system or simply a single special attack remains unknown. More detailed weapon information should become available once the Kingdom Hearts crossover goes live and the Kingdom Key enters Fortnite’s loot pool.
