Terranigma will launch on January 14, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, publisher Clear River Games has announced. The date gives the modern revival of Quintet’s 1995 action RPG a firm worldwide launch after it was previously scheduled only for early 2027. The release will also be available in several physical editions, including a premium Gaia Edition.

The new version preserves Terranigma’s original pixel-art presentation and real-time action RPG structure while adding a number of modern features. Clear River Games says the release includes quality-of-life improvements, additional display options and a new Arranged Mode designed to change some of the original balancing. The company is positioning the project as a modernized revival rather than a full remake.

Arranged Mode will make several notable gameplay changes, including increased magic damage, a mini-map and the ability to save progress from anywhere. Other additions include a Quick Magic button, item hot-swapping, remappable controls, a rewind function, customizable backgrounds using high-resolution artwork, a music player and an in-game museum. Players will also be able to use different aspect ratios and a CRT filter for a presentation closer to the original 16-bit release.

Terranigma follows Ark, a young resident of the underground village of Crysta whose actions ultimately begin restoring life to the surface world. The setting divides Earth into the external Lightside and internal Darkside, with Ark gradually reviving continents, plants, animals and human civilization as the story progresses. Combat is handled in real time, with Ark using a spear for thrusts, jumping attacks, dashes and other moves rather than relying on turn-based battles.

The 2027 release is especially significant because Terranigma never received an official North American launch during its original run. Enix released the game for Super Famicom in Japan in 1995, followed by a PAL release in Europe and Australia in 1996, but the North American version was cancelled after Enix closed its U.S. publishing operation. Clear River Games’ revival will therefore mark the first official release of Terranigma in that region more than three decades later.

Original character designer Kamui Fujiwara has returned to contribute new key artwork and in-game designs while also providing feedback during production. Clear River Games has said that the core pixel graphics, music and gameplay remain central to the experience, with the new material intended to complement rather than replace the original presentation. That approach puts Terranigma closer to a preservation-focused rerelease with expanded features than a ground-up visual remake.

Several physical versions will launch alongside the digital release. Standard editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X are priced at $39.99 / €39.99, while the Switch 2 edition is $44.99 / €44.99. A limited Foiled Standard Edition will be sold through Clear River Games and Limited Run Games, with SteelBook editions priced at $64.99 / €64.99.

The top-tier Gaia Edition costs $199.99 / €199.99 for PS5, Xbox Series X and Switch 2. It includes the physical game and SteelBook content alongside a Yomi vinyl figurine, a Pandora’s Box replica with a music box playing “Elle’s Theme,” a 200-page art book, an Ark enamel pin, a soundtrack CD and a cotton world map. The collector’s package is aimed squarely at longtime fans who have had limited official merchandise options since the original release.

Terranigma is one of several older Japanese games receiving modern revivals in 2027, alongside titles such as Psychic Force 2012 returning to PS5, Switch and PC. Clear River Games’ project stands out because of the original game’s long absence from modern storefronts and the fact that its upcoming launch will finally make it officially available in North America.

Terranigma will release worldwide on January 14, 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. The newly confirmed date, Arranged Mode and expanded physical lineup give one of the SNES era’s more elusive action RPGs a defined path back to modern platforms.
