GTA VI Extended Look Was Partly Designed as a Tutorial

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says Rockstar deliberately built a tutorial-like element into GTA VI’s 27-minute Extended Look, using the presentation not only to entertain viewers but also to teach them how the game works. Speaking with GamesBeat on September 16, Zelnick said interactive entertainment requires a different kind of marketing because players must understand how they will engage with a game before deciding to buy it. In his view, Rockstar used the Extended Look to deliver that information without turning the showcase into a conventional instructional video.

Zelnick explained that marketing games differs from marketing films or television because interactive entertainment asks more from the audience. A movie can simply be watched, while a game has to be installed, learned and actively played. That creates a need for marketing material that does more than establish tone or story, especially for a release as large as GTA VI.

According to Zelnick, Rockstar handled that challenge by embedding what he described as an element of “tutorial” into the Extended Look. The presentation moved through shooting, driving, robberies, exploration, character interactions and other systems while maintaining the pacing of an entertainment showcase. Rather than stopping to explicitly explain controls or mechanics, it demonstrated how GTA VI functions through extended gameplay sequences.

That helps explain why the August 27 presentation was so much longer than a normal Rockstar trailer. The Extended Look ran for roughly 27 minutes and was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, making it the most extensive official GTA VI gameplay presentation released so far. It followed Jason and Lucia through several scenarios across Leonida while showing combat, vehicles, police encounters, interiors and character switching.

Several individual systems visible in the footage have since drawn attention, including GTA VI’s Focus targeting system, which appears to distinguish between normal hits, incapacitations and lethal shots. Details like that support Zelnick’s description of the showcase as a way of quietly teaching players how the game operates without presenting the material as a traditional tutorial.

Zelnick also framed the strategy as part of a broader need to turn awareness into excitement. GTA VI already has extraordinary global recognition, but he argued that even a property with that level of awareness still has to show consumers what they are actually buying. Rockstar therefore has to communicate both the scale of the game and the experience of playing it, rather than relying solely on the Grand Theft Auto name.

The Extended Look has already had an impact beyond simply explaining gameplay. Songs featured during the showcase saw sharp increases in streaming activity, with several tracks recording dramatic Spotify gains after the presentation. UK hardware sales also rose in the following week, with PS5 and Xbox Series sales both climbing by more than 30% according to NielsenIQ data.

That response reinforces why Take-Two continues to invest heavily in marketing even for a game that arguably needs little introduction. Zelnick said the goal is not simply to make people aware that GTA VI exists, but to convert that awareness into enthusiasm and eventual purchase intent. In that context, a long-form gameplay presentation can function as both advertising and education.

The approach also fits Rockstar’s history of using extended gameplay videos to explain new systems ahead of release. Earlier Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption campaigns have included narrated gameplay demonstrations that break down mechanics and activities in detail. GTA VI’s Extended Look appears to follow the same underlying purpose, but with less overt instruction and a more cinematic structure.

Rockstar released GTA VI: An Extended Look on August 27 through Netflix before making it available on its own channels later that day. GTA VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
