Grand Theft Auto VI will let players deliberately incapacitate enemies instead of killing them through its new Focus system, according to details emerging from Rockstar’s recent hands-off previews. Focus slows the action and highlights specific areas of an enemy’s body, with red zones representing lethal targets and yellow zones indicating places that can disable an opponent without killing them. GTA VI also uses color-coded hit markers to communicate the result of a shot during combat.

The additional combat details were highlighted by GTA specialist videotech and are corroborated by information from content creator TGG, who previously attended a hands-off demonstration at Rockstar North. During that presentation, Rockstar North head of development Rob Nelson demonstrated several aspects of GTA VI’s aiming, weapon handling and movement systems. The information expands on mechanics visible in Rockstar’s recent Extended Look rather than relying solely on interpretation of individual frames from the footage.

Focus appears to function as GTA VI’s version of a temporary slow-motion targeting ability, although it does not automatically mark and execute targets in the same way as some implementations of Red Dead Redemption 2’s Dead Eye. Players remain responsible for aiming and firing while time is slowed. Red-highlighted areas can be targeted for lethal shots, while yellow areas such as limbs can be used to incapacitate enemies and remove them from a fight without necessarily killing them.

The game’s new hit-marker system reinforces that distinction once a shot connects. White indicates a normal hit, yellow signals that an enemy has been incapacitated, and red confirms a kill. The Extended Look already showed these different colors appearing during shootouts, but the preview information provides clearer context for what each one represents.

Focus has appeared separately within GTA VI’s redesigned interface, where an eye icon is used for its corresponding status meter. The new GTA VI HUD also includes separate health and energy indicators alongside Focus, suggesting Rockstar has made these character resources more explicit than in GTA V. Focus drains while being used, meaning the slow-motion targeting ability is not intended to remain active throughout an entire gunfight.

The lethal-versus-non-lethal distinction may also connect with GTA VI’s broader emphasis on player behavior. Preview information indicates that choices between killing and incapacitating people can affect the Criminal Profile system in certain situations, although the extent of those consequences has not yet been fully explained. Rockstar has already detailed a significantly more reactive law-enforcement system, with NPCs and police responding more dynamically to player appearance, vehicles and criminal actions.

Combat itself is also moving away from GTA V’s strong default lock-on behavior. The hands-off preview indicated that GTA VI defaults to a freer aiming model with some adjustable aim stickiness, although players will be able to alter aim assistance through the settings. Enemies also reportedly do not appear automatically as dots on the minimap during combat, making visual awareness and systems such as Focus more important when tracking threats.

Rockstar is making other changes to weapon handling at the same time. Long guns are more visibly carried, NPCs can react differently depending on how a weapon is being held, and personal vehicles play a larger role in storing a player’s broader arsenal. Those systems fit with other previewed features that add more physical interaction to GTA VI, including deeper vehicle and interior systems across Leonida.

The new incapacitation system is particularly notable because it gives gunfights an outcome beyond simply damaging or killing every hostile NPC. GTA IV was known for enemies sometimes surviving injuries and remaining incapacitated, while Red Dead Redemption 2 further expanded Rockstar’s work with detailed injury reactions and location-based damage. GTA VI appears to formalize that idea through a readable targeting and feedback system that allows players to intentionally choose between lethal and non-lethal outcomes.

Rockstar has not yet detailed every rule governing Focus or how frequently non-lethal choices will affect the Criminal Profile. What is now clearer from the preview material is that incapacitation is an intentional part of GTA VI’s combat design rather than an incidental NPC animation. With dedicated target colors, hit markers and a Focus resource built into the HUD, Rockstar appears to be giving players substantially more control over how individual gunfights end.
