A new firsthand Grand Theft Auto VI preview from Kinda Funny has revealed more about Rockstar’s approach to vehicles, enterable buildings, NPCs and even the television shows players will be able to watch around Leonida.
Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller and Andy Cortez visited Rockstar North in Scotland ahead of GTA VI’s Extended Look and were shown considerably more of the game than appeared in Rockstar’s public 27-minute presentation.
Rockstar’s official showcase was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, but Kinda Funny also asked about the Xbox versions. According to the pair, Rockstar said it is happy with how GTA VI is currently running on Xbox.
Rockstar was less forthcoming about PlayStation 5 Pro. Kinda Funny said the studio was not yet ready to discuss what specific PS5 Pro enhancements players should expect.
Another major part of the preview concerned vehicles.
Kinda Funny described car culture as a major focus in GTA VI, with customization substantial enough that the vehicle systems resemble those found in dedicated driving games rather than the comparatively limited customization available in earlier Grand Theft Auto titles.
Vehicles also interact with several of GTA VI’s wider systems. Kinda Funny discussed cars being registered to the player, the possibility of registered vehicles being impounded after crimes and an in-game scanner app capable of providing information about vehicles.
The app reportedly shows details including whether a vehicle is locked, its alarm setup, how difficult its tracker will be to evade and information related to its value and registration.
That increased focus extends beyond cars.
Rockstar is also pushing significantly further into explorable interiors. Kinda Funny stressed that not every building in GTA VI can be entered, but said Rockstar wants players to be able to access far more locations than in its previous games.
That aligns with other recent firsthand previews describing a world filled with businesses, restaurants and other interiors that can be entered naturally while exploring Leonida.
The density of the population was another standout.
Kinda Funny described streets filled with NPCs whose appearance and behavior seemed appropriate to their surroundings rather than feeling like characters assembled randomly from interchangeable pieces.
One demonstration also featured police responding to a bizarre nighttime situation and warning nearby residents to remain indoors while they searched the area.
Rockstar appears to be applying the same level of world-building to GTA VI’s fictional entertainment.
Televisions will once again be watchable, but Kinda Funny said the content goes considerably beyond short advertisements.
During the demonstration, they saw material from a soap opera as well as an animated comedy that they compared to Family Guy.
Rockstar reportedly hired animators to create complete episodes of fictional programming for the game, suggesting players may be able to spend significantly longer watching GTA VI’s parody television than in earlier entries.
That reflects a broader effort to make Leonida feel like a place that continues existing beyond the activities immediately required by missions.
The preview also offered more insight into how Rockstar is carrying ideas forward from Red Dead Redemption 2.
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has spoken repeatedly about preserving the role-playing and emergent qualities that worked well in Red Dead Redemption 2 while ensuring GTA VI does not inherit all of that game’s deliberately slow pacing.
Kinda Funny said Rockstar is conscious that some players found Red Dead Redemption 2 too slow and wants GTA VI to establish its own rhythm.
Some of the underlying role-playing philosophy remains, but it is being adapted to suit Grand Theft Auto’s faster movement, driving, crime and mission structure.
The result described by the preview is a game that borrows some of Red Dead Redemption 2’s simulation depth without attempting to turn GTA VI into the same kind of experience.
Rockstar has now released the Extended Look publicly, while previews from Kinda Funny and other invited outlets are filling in systems that were only briefly shown or omitted from the presentation.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
