PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S sales jumped by more than 30% in the UK during the week following Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look. NielsenIQ data reported by The Game Business shows PS5 hardware sales increased 33% week-over-week, while combined Xbox Series X|S sales rose 34%. The timing provides an early indication that interest surrounding GTA VI could already be influencing demand for current-generation consoles months before the game launches.
The increase followed Rockstar’s August 27 presentation, when the 26-minute GTA VI Extended Look premiered on Netflix before becoming available through Rockstar’s other channels. The presentation offered the most extensive official look at the game so far, covering Jason and Lucia, exploration, combat, vehicles and activities across Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. Netflix confirmed the footage was captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5.
The sales figures do not prove that GTA VI alone caused every additional console purchase, since NielsenIQ’s numbers measure retail movement rather than buyers’ motivations. However, the timing coincides with unusually high attention surrounding the Extended Look and comes during a difficult period for console hardware. UK console sales were down 14.4% year-over-year through the end of July, according to The Game Business, with PS5 sales down 32% over the same period.

Xbox Series X|S had been performing somewhat better, with UK sales up 3.1% year-over-year through July, but the 34% weekly increase still represents a substantial short-term acceleration. Nintendo Switch 2 sales reportedly increased by roughly a third during the same week as well, although its rise coincided with an impending price increase and therefore cannot be linked as closely to GTA VI. The data consequently gives the clearest GTA-related comparison on PS5 and Xbox, the two platforms where Rockstar’s game will actually launch.
Hardware availability is another factor. The Game Business reported that PS5 Pro systems had become difficult to find across UK third-party retailers, with only limited configurations still available directly through Sony at the time of its report. That does not establish GTA VI as the sole reason for the shortages, but it adds to signs of elevated demand following the presentation.
The Extended Look itself attracted an audience well beyond a conventional game trailer. Netflix reported 31.1 million views during its first four days, placing it at the top of the service’s English-language film chart and No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries tracked globally. The presentation also generated a 3.97 million peak livestream audience across reaction streams, demonstrating the scale of attention surrounding Rockstar’s first substantial gameplay presentation.
That interest has spread beyond gaming platforms. Sensor Tower data showed that Netflix U.S. mobile usage rose 35% around the Extended Look premiere, while web activity increased sharply compared with typical levels. The combination of streaming engagement and now higher console sales suggests Rockstar’s marketing campaign is reaching consumers who may not have previously upgraded to PS5 or Xbox Series hardware.
Whether that translates into sustained hardware growth remains uncertain. Newzoo analyst Ronan Patrick told The Game Business that current console pricing could limit the size of any GTA-driven install-base expansion, noting that inflation-adjusted hardware costs are substantially higher than when the current generation launched. That matters because players who have remained on older consoles now face a larger financial barrier when upgrading specifically for GTA VI.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC release date currently announced. With NielsenIQ recording 33% higher PS5 sales and 34% higher Xbox Series X|S sales immediately after the Extended Look, the game is already showing signs of becoming a hardware driver before reaching stores.
