Blizzard has confirmed that its newly announced StarCraft game will not be exclusive to Xbox, although the company is not yet naming the additional platforms it plans to support. A Blizzard spokesperson gave the clarification to Kotaku after the outlet asked about the game’s platform plans following its reveal at BlizzCon 2026. The confirmation leaves open the possibility of versions beyond Microsoft’s ecosystem, but Blizzard is not ready to specify where else the game will launch.

The new StarCraft open-world shooter was officially unveiled during BlizzCon on September 12 and is targeting spring 2030. Blizzard described it as an original open-world shooter set in the Koprulu Sector, marking a major departure from the real-time strategy format most closely associated with the franchise. Xbox’s own BlizzCon coverage also highlighted the announcement, contributing to questions about whether Microsoft’s ownership of Blizzard would affect its platform availability.

Kotaku subsequently asked Blizzard why Xbox had been mentioned while other platforms remained unspecified. A Blizzard spokesperson responded that the company could only say for now that StarCraft “won’t be exclusive.” When Kotaku sought clarification on whether that specifically ruled out Xbox console exclusivity, Blizzard stopped short of confirming PlayStation, Switch 2 or any other individual platform.

The wording means the safest conclusion is that StarCraft will be available somewhere beyond Xbox, rather than that any particular console version has already been confirmed. PC would be an obvious potential destination given Blizzard’s history and the franchise’s roots, but Blizzard’s response does not itself establish a complete platform list. The company also indicated that describing the game as Xbox-exclusive would be inaccurate.

That distinction matters because Microsoft’s current publishing strategy no longer assumes that every internally developed game will remain confined to Xbox consoles. Several Xbox-owned franchises have expanded onto competing hardware in recent years, while individual games continue to receive different platform strategies depending on their audience and commercial plans. StarCraft’s 2030 release window also leaves Blizzard several years to finalize and communicate its launch platforms.

The project is being led by Dan Hay, the former Far Cry executive who joined Blizzard after leaving Ubisoft. Blizzard has revealed relatively little gameplay information beyond describing StarCraft as an open-world shooter and confirming its return to the Koprulu Sector. Hay has said the team has been working on the project for some time, but its distant release date means many details remain subject to development over the coming years.

The game also represents Blizzard’s first major new StarCraft release announcement in years. StarCraft II’s final expansion, Legacy of the Void, launched in 2015, while the franchise has largely remained associated with its existing strategy games and esports community since then. Moving into an open-world shooter gives Blizzard a way to revisit the setting without simply producing another traditional RTS.

For now, Blizzard has not announced whether StarCraft will release on PlayStation 5, a future PlayStation platform, Nintendo Switch 2 or another console. It has also not published a complete launch-platform list alongside the 2030 target. What the company has now made clear is that Xbox will not be the game’s only destination.

More specific platform details will likely arrive closer to release as Blizzard reveals additional information about the project’s gameplay and technical requirements. Until then, the confirmed position is limited but significant: the new StarCraft is planned as a multiplatform release in some form, rather than an Xbox-exclusive title.
