Naughty Dog has confirmed that Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will remain quiet for the rest of 2026 before receiving a full reveal in 2027. Studio head Neil Druckmann also revealed that the developer has two new The Last of Us projects in very early stages, with both planned to expand the series’ canon beyond Part I and Part II. The update was published by Naughty Dog on September 28 as part of its closing message for The Last of Us Day. Naughty Dog
Druckmann said Naughty Dog has been discussing the possibility of returning to The Last of Us since the release of Grounded II. He confirmed that the studio now has “a couple” of new projects in their earliest stages, although he did not identify them or provide details about their platforms, formats or release plans. Most significantly, Druckmann said both projects will expand the canon beyond the events and established material of The Last of Us Part I and Part II. Naughty Dog
That wording confirms that Naughty Dog is actively developing more material set within The Last of Us universe, but it does not amount to an announcement of The Last of Us Part III. The studio has not disclosed whether either project is a direct sequel, a separate game, a spinoff or another type of experience. Earlier this month, Druckmann had already said Naughty Dog was not finished with the franchise and that multiple projects were in the works, but the new statement provides the clearest description yet of their intended relationship to the series canon. Druckmann’s comments also set expectations for Naughty Dog’s other major project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. The studio said the team is currently focused on development and that there will be no further Intergalactic news for the rest of 2026. In 2027, however, Naughty Dog plans to “fully reveal” the game and provide a proper look at protagonist Jordan A. Mun and her science-fiction adventure. Naughty Dog
Intergalactic was originally announced in December 2024 as a new PlayStation 5 franchise from Naughty Dog. The game stars Jordan, a bounty hunter who becomes stranded on the distant planet Sempiria, where communication with the outside universe has been absent for hundreds of years. Naughty Dog previously said development had been underway since 2020, while also confirming that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are composing the game’s soundtrack. Naughty Dog +1
The 2027 reveal therefore represents the first firm timing provided by Naughty Dog for a substantial follow-up to the original Intergalactic announcement. The studio has not announced a release date for the game, and the new update does not provide one. Naughty Dog’s official description continues to list Intergalactic as its next game and a PlayStation 5 title in development. Naughty Dog
The confirmation of two additional Last of Us projects also comes without release windows or production details. Naughty Dog emphasized that both are still in very early stages, meaning further information may not arrive for some time. For now, the studio has established two clear points: Intergalactic’s next major presentation is planned for 2027, while two separate Last of Us projects are being developed to take the franchise’s story beyond Parts I and II. For context on the franchise’s other recent developments, Naughty Dog’s future work follows the cancellation of its planned standalone multiplayer project, while the studio has continued maintaining and expanding its existing single-player releases. The developer’s new update makes clear that its next wave of projects will instead include the long-awaited Intergalactic reveal alongside previously unannounced stories within The Last of Us universe.
