GSC Game World has released update 2.1, titled The Zone Lookout, for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl on October 26, 2026. The update introduces adjustable A-Life NPC visualization distances, improvements to long-range combat and a new fast-travel system involving NPC squad leaders. It is available for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The release follows the initial announcement of update 2.1's A-Life and combat changes, which surfaced ahead of schedule through a PlayStation Asia social media post. GSC Game World has now published the gameplay details, including how players can configure NPC visibility and the restrictions governing squad-based travel.
The most significant addition is the ability to manually adjust how far away A-Life NPCs become visible. These characters form part of the game’s simulation system, allowing stalkers and other inhabitants to move and interact throughout the Zone independently of the player.

Previously, NPC visibility was more restricted, limiting how far players could observe activity in the environment. Update 2.1 introduces several visualization presets that can be selected through Settings > Game > Visualization options.
GSC Game World recommends keeping the default preset for the most stable experience. Increasing the visualization distance can affect performance and stability, particularly when more NPCs must remain visible across larger areas.
Players who prefer automatic adjustments can select the new Dynamic preset, which scales NPC visualization distance according to what their PC or console can handle. This provides an alternative to manually choosing a higher setting without accounting for hardware limitations.
The developer also warns that the available presets may differ between platforms and PC configurations. Importantly, the increased visualization range primarily applies to A-Life NPCs rather than quest-related or scripted characters. That distinction is intended to preserve the stability of story sequences while allowing more distant NPC activity to remain visible.
Combat has received corresponding adjustments to accommodate these longer viewing distances. GSC Game World has updated weapon ballistics and made balance changes to improve how gunfights behave at range.
Depending on the selected visualization preset, players can now hear firefights taking place considerably farther away. These changes are designed to make distant encounters more consistent with the expanded NPC visibility system.
Another major addition is fast travel through friendly or neutral stalker squad leaders. Eligible squad leaders are now identified on the player’s compass and can offer transportation to certain destinations through dialogue.
Unlike unrestricted map-based fast travel, the new system operates according to the squad leader’s existing travel route. Players can only select nearby destinations they have already explored, and those destinations must fall along the squad’s route.
The service also requires payment in coupons, although GSC Game World has not specified a universal fare. Players must have sufficient funds and cannot use the service while overloaded with equipment.
These restrictions mean that encountering a squad leader does not provide an immediate route to every discovered location. A stalker encountered near Zalissya, for example, cannot simply transport the player across the map to Prypiat.
The system instead offers another way to move between nearby locations while travelling through the Zone, using NPC squads already operating in the environment.
Alongside the new gameplay features, update 2.1 includes a broader collection of bug fixes and improvements. GSC Game World says the changes were developed in response to player feedback gathered through social media, community forums and reviews.
With The Zone Lookout now available, players can customize how much distant A-Life activity appears on screen, balance those settings against performance and use squad leaders for paid travel between eligible locations. The update expands several existing gameplay systems rather than introducing a separate story expansion.
