Ruren Studio has released a free Steam demo for One-Time Trigger, an upcoming first-person psychological horror game in which players must identify a dangerous doppelganger hiding among seven patients at a special care facility. The demo became available in late October 2026, introducing an investigation system where players have just one bullet to eliminate the impostor. Choosing the wrong target results in failure.
The game takes place inside Providence Special Care Facility, where players participate in an unusual recruitment examination designed to test their observation, reasoning and decision-making under pressure. Seven patients occupy the facility, each with distinct medical conditions, physical characteristics and behavioral patterns. One of them will eventually be replaced by an entity capable of imitating a patient’s appearance and behavior.
The demo begins by asking players to familiarize themselves with the patients before the replacement occurs. Players must speak with each individual, examine their characteristics and remember their habits. Once the doppelganger takes someone’s place, they must investigate the patients again and determine which person is no longer who they appear to be.

According to the official Steam description, the doppelganger can replace a randomly selected patient during each test. This means the correct target can change between attempts, requiring players to examine the available evidence rather than rely on a solution from a previous playthrough.
The full game’s Steam description outlines a broader investigation process involving conversations, environmental clues and unusual reactions from objects. Some care rooms require specific items before they can be entered, while others impose special rules that players must follow. The doppelganger may also imitate objects, adding another potential source of uncertainty.
Once players believe they have identified the impostor, they must retrieve a firearm and make their decision. With only one bullet available, mistakenly shooting an innocent patient immediately fails the examination. The full game’s description also establishes a time limit for eliminating the doppelganger, making prolonged hesitation another possible cause of failure.
The demo supports multiple endings, with different judgments influencing the outcome. Its randomized replacement system is designed to make repeated investigations less predictable, even after players become familiar with the facility and its occupants.
One-Time Trigger joins a selection of smaller psychological horror releases on Steam, including Playable Archive, a free horror game from The Mortuary Assistant developer. Both offer players an opportunity to explore standalone horror experiences without an upfront purchase.
The One-Time Trigger demo is available for Windows PC with English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese interface and subtitle support. Its Steam listing identifies an Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD FX-8320 processor and an NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB graphics card among the minimum hardware requirements, alongside approximately 500 MB of available storage.
Ruren Studio is developing and publishing the full game. Its Steam store page currently lists a planned 2026 release, although no specific launch date has been confirmed. Players can wishlist the full version while accessing the free demo separately.
