Cyberpunk 2 could feature multiplayer functionality, according to a CD Projekt Red job listing that specifically mentions network architecture and synchronization for quests. The requirement offers another indication that the developer is exploring online systems for its upcoming RPG, although multiplayer has not been officially announced.
The listing seeks a Lead Quest Programmer to work on Cyberpunk 2, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, currently being developed under CD Projekt Red’s North American team centered in Boston. Among the position’s preferred qualifications is an understanding of “multiplayer network architecture and client-server synchronization for game state/quests.”
Importantly, the requirement appears in the listing’s “Nice to Have” section, which explicitly states that these skills are not mandatory. This distinction means the job posting cannot be treated as confirmation that multiplayer will appear in the finished game.

What makes the listing particularly interesting is its connection to quest programming rather than general network infrastructure. Client-server synchronization allows different players’ game sessions to maintain consistent information, including changes to objectives, mission progression and other gameplay states.
In a multiplayer RPG, such technology could potentially support shared quest progression or cooperative missions. However, CD Projekt Red has not revealed whether Cyberpunk 2 will include cooperative gameplay, competitive multiplayer or any other online mode.
The Lead Quest Programmer’s primary responsibilities remain focused on narrative technology. The successful applicant will lead an engineering team developing story and quest systems, work with quest designers and directors, and collaborate with developers responsible for the studio’s shared custom story framework.
Other responsibilities include maintaining quest features, improving development tools, optimizing runtime performance and writing C++ code. The posting also identifies familiarity with Unreal Engine architecture as a desirable qualification.
This is not the first indication that CD Projekt Red has considered multiplayer technology for Cyberpunk 2. A Lead Network Engineer vacancy reported in 2025 also referenced network systems and multiplayer-related development, raising questions about whether the sequel could introduce online functionality.
The latest listing adds a more specific detail to that earlier evidence by connecting multiplayer networking knowledge directly to the systems responsible for managing quests and narrative progression.
Cyberpunk 2077 was originally expected to receive multiplayer functionality, but CD Projekt Red ultimately abandoned those plans to concentrate on the main game’s development and improvements.
Since then, the studio has continued expanding the original RPG through content and technical improvements, including the Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5, which introduced additional gameplay features and quests.
For Cyberpunk 2, the available information still points primarily toward a story-driven RPG. The new hiring requirements suggest that multiplayer-related expertise could be useful to the development team, but they do not establish how that expertise will be used.
CD Projekt Red has not confirmed multiplayer support, detailed the sequel’s online features or announced an official release date. Until the developer provides further information, the possibility of multiplayer quest systems remains an indication from its recruitment requirements rather than a confirmed gameplay feature.
