Composer Austin Wintory has released approximately 22 minutes of previously unheard music created as part of his pitch to compose the soundtrack for Mass Effect 5. The collection, published on his YouTube channel on October 26, 2026, offers a glimpse of the musical direction he envisioned for BioWare’s cancelled RPG.
Wintory, known for his work on Journey, The Banner Saga and Sword of the Sea, revealed that he had spent several years discussing a potential role on the project with BioWare and Electronic Arts. During those conversations, he independently developed and recorded a collection of musical concepts in 2025, hoping to demonstrate how the franchise’s established sound could evolve.
The composer shared the recordings publicly following EA's decision to close BioWare and cancel development of the next Mass Effect game on October 21.

Wintory described Mass Effect as his dream project and explained that the music was intended as a tribute to the franchise’s original composers, Jack Wall and Sam Hulick.
His proposed direction retained the electronic foundations of the first Mass Effect soundtrack while incorporating more physical analog synthesizers and a closer integration between synthesizers and orchestral instruments. He compared the approach to the hybrid electronic and orchestral scoring associated with The Matrix.
The recordings were produced in Los Angeles using synthesizers, vocals and a large orchestra. Wintory described the project as an elaborate creative presentation intended to demonstrate his vision to BioWare and EA.
Importantly, the material was not an officially commissioned soundtrack. Wintory confirmed that he had not received any narrative details about the upcoming game when he composed the music, meaning the recordings represented his own interpretation of the Mass Effect universe rather than themes written for confirmed story sequences or characters.
The publicly released collection contains eight pieces:
– The Legacy of Shepard
– Sailing the Relays
– Scanning
– To Fight For Something More Than Credits
– Something Different, Something Older
– Hold the Line
– Forever Calibrating
– The Legacy of Shepard (Remix)
The titles reference familiar elements of the series, including Commander Shepard, the mass relay network and dialogue associated with its characters. However, they should not be interpreted as confirmation that these elements would have appeared in the cancelled game’s storyline.
Wintory’s recordings can be heard on his official YouTube channel in a video titled “My ideas for Mass Effect 5.” The approximately 22-minute presentation includes commentary explaining the creative thinking behind the compositions.
The release adds another piece of previously unseen creative material associated with Mass Effect’s cancelled successor. Other information emerging after BioWare’s closure has included reported story and gameplay details for the cancelled Mass Effect Universe project, although Wintory’s compositions were developed without knowledge of the planned narrative.
The cancellation has also prompted a substantial fan response. A petition calling for Mass Effect to continue surpassed 200,000 signatures following the studio’s closure, reflecting continued interest in the franchise.
Despite the discussions between Wintory, BioWare and EA, no formal agreement establishing him as the game’s composer has been confirmed. His released music therefore represents an independently developed soundtrack proposal, not completed music removed from a finished game.
With development cancelled, there is no indication that these compositions will appear in an official Mass Effect release. For fans, the recordings provide a rare opportunity to hear one possible musical direction for the next installment before the project was abandoned.
