The original Dragon Ball Z: Budokai has received an unofficial browser-playable version, bringing the 2002 PlayStation 2 fighting game to modern desktop and mobile devices. The fan-made project reportedly runs at 60 frames per second and includes the complete game, allowing players to access its original modes without installing a traditional console emulator.

The browser version supports Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and mobile browsers, according to coverage published on October 28, 2026. It is described as an independent, non-commercial technical research demonstration rather than an officially licensed release from Bandai Namco or the franchise’s other rights holders.

Unlike a limited demonstration featuring only selected characters or battles, the project reportedly includes Story Mode, Duel Mode, World Match, Practice and Legend of Mr. Satan. It also comes with a prepared save file containing unlocked characters, reducing the need to progress through the original game before accessing additional fighters.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai originally launched for PlayStation 2 in 2002, introducing a three-dimensional fighting system built around characters and battles from Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball universe. Its story campaign covers events from the Saiyan Saga through the Cell Saga, while its other modes provide individual fights, tournaments and training opportunities.

The game established the Budokai fighting series, which continued with two numbered sequels before the separate Budokai Tenkaichi franchise expanded Dragon Ball’s presence in console gaming.

The browser adaptation is part of a growing number of unofficial projects exploring ways to run older console games on modern hardware. Some of these efforts use reverse engineering and AI-assisted development to adapt existing games for PC or web browsers without relying on conventional emulation setups.

However, the availability of a browser-based version does not make it an official remaster or rerelease. The Budokai project has no stated affiliation with Sony, Bandai Namco, Shueisha or Toei Animation, and its long-term availability remains uncertain.

The reported 60 FPS performance has not been independently verified across different browsers and mobile devices. Detailed system requirements, compatibility limitations and the project’s underlying technical implementation also remain unclear.

Unofficial browser ports can face copyright-related challenges, as demonstrated when an unofficial GTA V browser port went offline shortly after attracting attention. No comparable enforcement action against the Budokai project has been confirmed.

For now, the browser version represents another community-driven attempt to make a classic console game accessible on modern devices, although its performance, security and continued availability cannot be guaranteed.
