Steam Review Delays Reach 12 Business Days as Valve Updates Process

Valve has confirmed that Steam store-page and game-build reviews are taking up to 12 business days following a significant increase in developer submissions. The delays, considerably longer than the platform’s usual three-to-five-business-day review window, have already disrupted some independent game launches.

In an official Steamworks announcement on November 3, 2026, Valve acknowledged the growing approval backlog and outlined changes to its pre-release review process. The company is updating its developer checklist to reduce avoidable rejections and repeated reviews, while additional improvements to the build-review process are being developed.

Before a game can launch on Steam, developers must submit both their store page and a playable build for Valve’s approval. The process checks that store descriptions accurately represent the game, advertised features are implemented and the submitted build functions correctly.

Valve’s existing documentation describes a typical review period of three to five business days for each submission and recommends allowing at least seven business days to accommodate potential corrections. The newly acknowledged delays of up to 12 business days mean developers preparing upcoming releases may need substantially more time.

The slowdown has already affected smaller studios. Food Devils, developed by Studio Daimon, was still awaiting approval when its planned early-access launch date arrived. Meanwhile, publisher 2 Left Thumbs said its cooperative physics game Wheel Make It launched nearly two weeks later than intended after encountering review delays and a rejection involving a menu option that could not be accessed using a controller.

Valve says repeated reviews caused by basic functionality problems are contributing to the backlog. To address this, the updated pre-release checklist asks developers to launch their games through Steam and play for at least five minutes before submitting a build.

This requirement matters because directly launching a game’s executable does not necessarily reproduce the experience players encounter when installing and running it through the Steam client. Testing through Steam can reveal problems that would otherwise become apparent during Valve’s review.

Developers are also being asked to verify that Steam achievements are properly configured and identify any required shared redistributables, including DirectX and Microsoft Visual C++ components. These dependencies must be configured so Steam can install the software needed for the game to function.

The changes are intended to catch common technical problems before developers enter the approval queue, reducing submissions that require corrections and another review.

The rising volume of submissions comes amid a particularly active period for Steam’s independent development community. Events such as the October 2026 Steam Next Fest continue to highlight the number of games competing for attention on Valve’s platform. Separately, an analysis of generative AI disclosures in October's Steam releases found that nearly half of the month’s released titles disclosed some use of generative AI.

However, Valve has not established that AI-generated games are responsible for the increased review times. Its announcement identifies higher submission volumes and repeated reviews as problems without attributing the surge to a particular development method.

For developers, the immediate consequence is greater uncertainty when scheduling launches, especially when a rejected build must return for another review. For PC players, the backlog could mean additional delays for smaller games that are otherwise ready to release.

Valve has not announced when review times are expected to return to their usual range. Its updated checklist is an initial measure to reduce avoidable submission problems while the company works on further improvements to the approval process.
