With each new Nintendo Direct, excitement among gamers reaches a fever pitch, as they eagerly anticipate fresh announcements and the future direction of their favorite franchises. Nintendo has built a reputation to surprise fans with unexpected developments, sparking rampant speculations about breakthroughs or return of beloved characters.

A number of fans were expecting the reveal of a new 3D Mario game during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct earlier this month, particularly given that it’s been eight years since the release of Super Mario Odyssey, the last title in the series.

Instead, Nintendo surprised everyone by unveiling Donkey Kong Bananza, a 3D platform starring Dokey Kong. The game appears to be built using engine similar to that of Super Mario Odyssey, though the developer behind it has yet to be confirmed.

In a recent interview, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser addressed the absence of a new Mario game for the Switch 2. He assured fans that a Mario title would indeed come to the new console, urging them to “stay tuned” and promising that many of Nintendo’s popular franchises would make their way to the platform.

Importance: Fan reactions to Switch 2 are mixed: some want Super Mario Galaxy 3, while others seek innovation, driven by competitors like Astro Bot. This split challenges Nintendo to balance legacy and new IPs as it prepares for a competitive 2025 gaming market.

    Nintendo’s Secrecy Around Upcoming Games

Nintendo remains tight-lipped about the development team behind Donkey Kong Bananza, sparking concern among fans that it may be the work of a Super Mario Odyssey team—potentially delaying a new 3D Mario by several years.

When pressed by gaming media, Nintendo simply urged fans to regularly follow the developments or “check the credits at release”, continuing its trend of withholding team details for recent projects.

Mario Kart World Ushers In New Era For Switch 2

However, despite the concerns over the future of 3D Mario, fans won’t be left empty handed at launch—Mario Kart World will debut alongside the Switch 2. As the first new home console entry in over a decade, it promises a bold reinvention, akin to Breath of the Wild’s shift in the Zelda, with a fresh open-world approach.

Fans are eagerly awaiting a new 3D Mario game, but for now, Mario Kart World is set to take the spotlight on Switch 2.

Switch 2 Features, Higher Price, & Preorder Delays

Nintendo is sticking with its successful hybrid console concept with the Switch 2, launching on June 5 for $450. It brings major upgrades like 4K visuals, more storage, better cooling, and new Joy-Con features, aiming to compete with growing handheld rivals like Steam Deck.

The console is also focusing on third-party game to attract a wider audience. However, its higher price and delay in U.S. preorders due to tariff concerns pose some challenges. Despite no new mainline Mario revealed yet, Nintendo is promising more titles will come to the new platform.

Nintendo Switch 2 blends familiar charm with bold upgrades, aiming to stay ahead in an increasingly competitive gaming market. With strong IPs and fresh features, it’s set to shape the next era f hybrid gaming.
