PlayStation 5 was the clear winner of Black Friday 2025 in the UK, securing an impressive 62% of all console sales for the week.

The latest data from NielsenIQ, reported by The Game Business, shows that overall hardware performance improved compared to last year, with revenue rising by 14% and unit sales increasing by 7% across the board. This surge was driven largely by the PS5, which significantly outperformed its competitors thanks to widespread price cuts and aggressive holiday promotions.

Sony’s discount strategy played a major role in the console’s Black Friday success. The standard PS5 model was selling for about 21% less than it had been just two weeks earlier, while the Digital Edition saw an even steeper reduction of around 34%.

The PS5 Pro also benefited from a strong week, achieving its highest sales since launch while being offered at an all-time low price near £586. With the average selling price of the PS5 dropping to roughly £340 during the sales period, many UK gamers saw this as the perfect opportunity to enter the PlayStation ecosystem ahead of major 2026 releases.

Competitors performed notably lower in comparison. Nintendo Switch 2 claimed around 23% of the UK market during Black Friday and maintained a higher average selling price, reflecting its newer status in the market. Xbox Series X and S consoles collectively reached only about 10% of the week’s market share, continuing a recent trend of weaker UK performance for Microsoft’s hardware.

Meanwhile, the original Nintendo Switch still accounted for around 5% of sales, largely appealing to budget-focused shoppers and families seeking a secondary console.

The week’s top-selling games in Europe further illustrated the strong momentum behind major franchises. EA Sports FC 26 led both unit sales and revenue charts, followed by titles such as Hogwarts Legacy, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Battlefield 6, and NBA 2K26.

Sony’s own Ghost of Yotei and Spider-Man 2 also appeared in the revenue top ten, while Nintendo maintained a strong presence with Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2, despite the lack of digital data.

The results highlight several ongoing trends in the gaming industry. Pricing continues to be one of the most influential factors during holiday shopping periods, and Sony’s willingness to offer deeper discounts than in previous years clearly paid off.

The data also reinforces the PS5’s position as the dominant console in the UK, even against fresh competition like the Switch 2. With the holiday season still underway, the momentum gained from Black Friday is likely to carry through December, positioning Sony for one of its strongest quarters of the generation.
