A24 is stepping out of its indie comfort zone and into the Lands Between. The acclaimed studio has officially announced the full cast and a theatrical release date for its adaptation of the blockbuster video game Elden Ring, confirming that production is underway in the United Kingdom with a budget reportedly exceeding $100 million .
This makes the project the most expensive and ambitious in A24’s history, signaling a major pivot towards high-budget fantasy epic fare.
Director Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War) is at the helm of the live-action adaptation, which is set to hit IMAX theaters on March 3, 2028 . While character details remain under wraps, the ensemble cast is led by Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus), Ben Whishaw (Paddington), Kit Connor (Heartstopper), and Nick Offerman (The Last of Us) . They are joined by Tom Burke, Jonathan Pryce, and Peter Serafinowicz.
This pivot to high fantasy is a calculated risk for A24. According to industry reports, the budget is “well over” $100 million, with a scheduled 100-day shoot . For comparison, this dwarfs Garland’s Civil War, which was previously A24’s most expensive film at roughly $50 million.
The film is a co-production with Bandai Namco Entertainment and is produced by Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin, who co-wrote the game’s mythology .
The financial commitment underscores the value of the Elden Ring IP. The 2022 game sold over 30 million copies worldwide and won Game of the Year . However, adapting a FromSoftware game—notorious for its opaque, environmental storytelling and lack of linear dialogue—presents a unique challenge.

Garland appears aware of this difficulty. Reports indicate he personally flew to Japan to pitch a 160-page script to game director Hidetaka Miyazaki to secure his blessing . Unlike standard action movies, this adaptation must preserve the “Tarnished” journey’s lonely, brutal atmosphere while fitting it into a traditional Hollywood structure.
The Verdict With filming commencing this week, the industry will be watching closely to see if A24’s arthouse sensibility can successfully translate to a blockbuster scale . If Garland succeeds, Elden Ring could redefine how literary, atmospheric video games are brought to the big screen, setting a new precedent for the genre. For now, the casting of acclaimed dramatic actors suggests a focus on gravitas over mere spectacle.
