SEGA has confirmed Bayonetta as the first free Year Two character coming to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. The Umbra Witch will join the racing game’s roster with her own machine, the Butterfly Witch, alongside character-specific emotes and sounds. SEGA has not yet announced an exact release date for the update.

The announcement confirms that CrossWorlds’ free character program will continue beyond its first year of post-launch support. SEGA introduced numerous guest racers through free updates during Year One, expanding the roster with characters drawn from its wider catalogue rather than limiting additions to the Sonic series. Bayonetta now establishes that the same approach will carry into Year Two.

Her inclusion also gives SEGA another major franchise crossover without requiring players to buy a premium character pack. Bayonetta will be available as a free update, separating her from the paid crossover content planned through the game’s second season pass. That distinction matters because SEGA is running both free guest-character updates and larger premium collaborations at the same time.

Bayonetta’s Butterfly Witch machine is being introduced specifically for her appearance in CrossWorlds. SEGA also says the update will include themed emotes and sounds, though it has not yet detailed their full selection. No new course has been announced as part of Bayonetta’s free update, making the package closer in structure to previous free racer additions than the larger paid crossover packs.

CrossWorlds already used that model extensively during Year One. Free additions included characters such as AiAi from Super Monkey Ball, Goro Majima from Like a Dragon, Arle from Puyo Puyo and Classic Sonic, each arriving with a signature vehicle and, in some cases, additional music. SEGA’s most recent free crossover before the Bayonetta announcement brought Amigo from Samba de Amigo to the game on September 9.

The paid side of Year Two is considerably larger. SEGA announced in June that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Season Pass Two will include crossover packs based on Godzilla and Evangelion, with four additional crossover packs still unannounced. Those packs are expected to contain broader themed content than the free racers, including additional machines and other crossover material.

That gives CrossWorlds two parallel content tracks as it moves beyond its first year. Free racers can expand the playable roster with recognizable SEGA characters, while Season Pass Two is positioned around larger licensed collaborations. Bayonetta’s arrival suggests SEGA intends to keep its own catalogue involved even as the game’s premium DLC moves toward external franchises.

The announcement comes as Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds continues receiving substantial post-launch support. SEGA has added racers, music, balance changes, gadgets, platform features and live events throughout 2026, while also preparing a World Championship competition. A Year One Edition listing for PS5 has also pointed toward a packaged version containing the game’s earlier downloadable content.

Bayonetta is a particularly notable choice because she expands CrossWorlds beyond franchises that have already had a strong history of Sonic-adjacent appearances. The character debuted in PlatinumGames’ 2009 action title and has since become one of SEGA’s most recognizable modern characters, despite later entries in the series being published by Nintendo. Her arrival in CrossWorlds gives the character another appearance outside her own action series while retaining her signature visual identity.

SEGA has not yet confirmed when the Bayonetta update will launch, nor whether a dedicated festival or additional music will accompany her arrival. Previous free racer updates have often been paired with limited-time events and Jukebox additions, but those details have not been announced for Bayonetta.

For now, Bayonetta is confirmed as the first free racer of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Year Two, bringing the Butterfly Witch machine, themed emotes and sounds with her. More Year Two content is expected to be revealed as SEGA continues detailing both its free character updates and the upcoming second season pass.
