Bill Skarsgård has been confirmed as the lead actor in PHYSINT, Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage game. Kojima Productions announced the casting on September 17 during Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast, while also revealing a new poster featuring Skarsgård alongside previously announced cast member Charlee Fraser. The studio has not yet revealed the name of Skarsgård’s character or additional story details.
Kojima said he and Skarsgård had been longtime admirers of each other’s work before deciding to collaborate on the project. According to the director, Skarsgård and Fraser completed costume fittings, scans and camera tests earlier in 2026, giving Kojima confidence in the direction of the production. The newly released PHYSINT poster uses a photograph shot personally by Kojima and gives the clearest look so far at how the two actors will appear in the project.
Skarsgård joins a cast that already includes Fraser, Don Lee and Minami Hamabe. Those three performers were announced during Kojima Productions’ Beyond the Strand 10th anniversary event in September 2025, when the studio also showed early visual material for PHYSINT. Kojima Productions says more casting announcements are still planned, suggesting the revealed group represents only part of the final ensemble.

Skarsgård is best known internationally for playing Pennywise in It and It: Chapter Two, while his other film credits include Nosferatu, Barbarian, John Wick: Chapter 4, The Crow and Atomic Blonde. He also returned as Pennywise for the television series It: Welcome to Derry. Kojima Productions highlighted his recent work in Dead Man’s Wire and The Death of Robin Hood while announcing the casting.
PHYSINT is being positioned as a major return to the action-espionage genre for Kojima. The project was first announced in 2024 and has repeatedly been described as an attempt to push beyond the boundaries of a conventional video game using film production techniques, performance capture and high-end technology. Kojima Productions now calls it the studio’s third original intellectual property and describes the project as a culmination of Kojima’s roughly four decades working in games.
The casting reveal also comes shortly after a major change behind the project. Xbox recently became PHYSINT’s new publishing partner after Sony Interactive Entertainment ended its involvement, with Xbox taking over publishing duties for PHYSINT. Microsoft and Kojima Productions were already working together on OD, and the expanded partnership now includes both PHYSINT and future collaboration across film and television.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said when that agreement was announced that the company wanted to support Kojima’s ambition to challenge established creative conventions. Kojima, meanwhile, said the Xbox partnership would allow Kojima Productions to continue pursuing its goal of redefining the action-espionage genre. Neither company has announced a release window for PHYSINT, and current official updates remain focused on casting and production rather than gameplay.
The latest announcement does not provide new information about platforms, combat, stealth mechanics or the game’s structure. Kojima Productions has so far kept most of those details under wraps, emphasizing the project’s cast, visual direction and broader cinematic ambitions instead. The confirmed scanning and camera work with Skarsgård and Fraser does indicate that performance production is already underway even though the game remains some distance from release.
With Skarsgård now confirmed as the protagonist, PHYSINT has its central performer in place alongside an increasingly prominent supporting cast. Kojima Productions says it intends to continue revealing additional talent as development progresses, while Xbox will publish the finished game under the companies’ expanded partnership. A release date has not yet been announced.
