Call of Duty: Warzone’s Black Ops Royale mode will reportedly be removed when Modern Warfare 4 integrates with the free-to-play game. CharlieIntel reported the planned removal on September 8, meaning the Blackout-inspired mode could disappear less than a year after making its Warzone debut. Activision and Raven Software have not yet publicly confirmed that Black Ops Royale will be permanently removed, so the change should currently be treated as reported rather than official.
Black Ops Royale launched on March 12, 2026 as a major alternative to Warzone’s standard Battle Royale experience. Built around Avalon and heavily inspired by Black Ops 4’s Blackout, the mode changed several familiar Warzone systems, including how players obtained weapons and equipment. Activision continues to describe Black Ops Royale as a free Warzone mode inspired by Blackout, and it remains listed alongside Battle Royale and Resurgence in current store descriptions.
The mode has not remained continuously available since launch. Raven temporarily removed standard Black Ops Royale during Season 3 Reloaded while rotating in its Hot Pursuit variant, and playlist changes later affected individual squad sizes as the studio responded to player populations. Black Ops Royale Solos was among the formats added after launch, first appearing through Private Matches before reaching broader playlists.
Its reported removal would coincide with another major annual transition for Warzone. Activision has officially confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 will integrate with Warzone when Season 1 begins following the game’s October 23 launch, bringing the new title’s content and seasonal progression into the free-to-play experience. That integration will also mark the end of Warzone support on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the game moving forward on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and supported PC platforms.
Modern Warfare 4’s Warzone plans already include substantial new content. Activision has announced Zodiac, a Resurgence map developed by Beenox, while the Hajin map used for DMZ is also scheduled to support Battle Royale when Season 1 arrives. The publisher has additionally been testing Warzone alongside Modern Warfare 4 ahead of launch, including Zodiac during the game’s recent open beta.
Removing Black Ops Royale would therefore leave the mode closely tied to the Black Ops 7 era rather than carrying it into Warzone’s next annual integration. That would be notable because the mode was introduced as one of Warzone’s most substantial Battle Royale experiments in years, deliberately borrowing systems and pacing from Blackout rather than simply functioning as another limited-time ruleset. It has also continued receiving playlist attention throughout 2026, including its return as part of Season 5 Reloaded in August.
The reported decision does not necessarily mean every feature introduced through Black Ops Royale will disappear from Warzone. Previous annual integrations have carried individual mechanics forward while retiring modes or restructuring playlists around the newest premium Call of Duty release. Activision has not explained whether any Black Ops Royale systems will be incorporated into standard Battle Royale once Modern Warfare 4 takes over.
Modern Warfare 4 itself is already confirmed for an October 23 release, with Season 1 and the corresponding Warzone integration following afterward. Earlier information around the game has included both officially announced features and unconfirmed reports about its direction, including pre-release Modern Warfare 4 gameplay claims that circulated before Activision’s full reveal. The Warzone transition, however, is official; only Black Ops Royale’s reported removal remains unconfirmed.
For now, Black Ops Royale is still part of the current Black Ops 7-era Warzone experience. CharlieIntel’s report indicates that will change once Modern Warfare 4’s Season 1 integration arrives, ending the mode’s run less than a year after launch. Activision has yet to publish the full Season 1 Warzone roadmap or formally confirm Black Ops Royale’s removal.
