Crimson Desert’s world map has expanded dramatically following the October 29 launch of Charting the Unknown, a new DLC from developer Pearl Abyss. Gameplay footage circulating on October 30 shows the original continent occupying only a fraction of the newly expanded map, with an enormous ocean extending far beyond the boundaries of the base game. The expansion introduces navigable seas, explorable islands and underwater environments, substantially increasing the space available for exploration.
The scale of the expansion has become clearer through footage showing the in-game map gradually zooming out from the original continent to reveal the surrounding ocean. At the widest view, the landmass that previously formed the game’s main playable world appears to occupy roughly a quarter of the expanded map. However, this is a visual estimate rather than an officially confirmed measurement, and Pearl Abyss has not published an exact comparison of the original and expanded map areas.
Importantly, much of the additional map consists of ocean rather than new land. The expansion is therefore not equivalent to adding several continents of the same size as the original world. Nevertheless, the new waters are intended to be explored, with ships providing access to distant islands and diving mechanics opening previously inaccessible environments beneath the surface.

Pearl Abyss confirmed these exploration features in its October 20 DLC overview. Players can construct or purchase ships and sail across the Great Ocean of Pywel, discovering islands and new locations along the way. Beneath the waves, underwater exploration introduces sunken ruins, treasure chests, additional creatures and mounts.
Underwater exploration is available to all three playable protagonists: Kliff, Oongka and Damiane. Unlike some other DLC activities, diving does not require completing a specific quest beforehand. However, characters consume breath while submerged, limiting how long they can remain underwater. Equipment such as diving suits can extend their underwater exploration time.
Ship access has separate progression requirements. Players must first establish their Greymane Camp at Howling Hill to unlock the relevant questline. Ships can then be obtained through ship-building dispatch missions at ports or purchased from Fleet Office managers.
The addition of ocean exploration represents one of the expansion’s most significant gameplay changes. Rather than simply extending the existing land-based adventure, Charting the Unknown introduces another environment to navigate, with its own discoveries and progression systems. Fully explorable underwater locations also give players reasons to investigate the ocean beyond traveling between islands.
Other games have similarly incorporated seafaring and underwater systems into their open-world expansions, including Once Human's Isles of Abyss expansion, which introduces ocean regions, customizable ships and underwater exploration.
Beyond the expanded world map, Charting the Unknown adds three new character-specific storylines, one each for Kliff, Oongka and Damiane. These become accessible through the Journal after completing the main campaign. A separate ocean-focused storyline becomes available after players finish the Howling Hill portion of the main story.
The DLC also introduces expanded housing customization, property and business management, romance and marriage systems, and the Garden of Trials, a combat challenge featuring previously encountered bosses.
Charting the Unknown officially launched on October 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Pearl Abyss also confirmed availability through the Mac App Store, although its update may arrive slightly later on some systems.
While the expanded map’s precise dimensions remain unverified, the footage demonstrates a substantial increase in the geographical area represented in Crimson Desert. How much of that additional space contains meaningful exploration content remains a separate question from the map’s overall size. What is confirmed is that players can now venture beyond Pywel’s original shores, travel across a much larger ocean and explore locations beneath its surface.
